Girl, 5, carries toddler half a mile in -35C with no shoes on after Alaska blackout

The 5 year old and 18 month year old arrived at a neighbours home suffering from injuries relating to the cold weather.

Alone and frightened by an electricity blackout, a shoeless five-year-old child carried her younger sibling half a mile to a neighbour's house in -35C (-31F).

Alaska state troopers were called after welfare concerns were raised for the two children in Venetie, a village in the northwestern American state.

The five-year-old and 18-month-old arrived at the neighbour's home suffering from injuries relating to the cold weather. They had been dressed only in socks and light clothing.

The drug problem is brought to you by our own PAID Government employees, the CIA. An agency filled from its inception with men of evil intent. They trot around the globe destroying people, entire nations and entire generations of people so that they can have the money to continue their evil enterprise of destruction.

I Don’t give a crap who this offends, War is coming, people are pissed! You the Government have deliberately and carefully squeezed We the People to the point of explosive levels !!, You in our Government at every level are to blame!

You with all of your POWERS have raised the cost of living so high that both parents are always at work, rather than spending time with their children (single parents stand no chance).

You took God out of schools. Parents were told 'No you can't discipline your kids'. Well, our kids are assholes. You shall reap what you sow, and we have lost a whole generation and turned them into rude, selfish, disrespectful brats who have no respect for people, property or authority!

You deemed people with terminal illnesses and some with only a few months to live…fit for work, and at the same time import immigrants and bathe them in money and services that our own citizens are denied!!!

You allow our veterans of war to go homeless and hungry but give out millions to foreign aid!!! You save drug addicts over and over again but refuse to give free diabetic supplies. You give billions in foreign aid, yet our own American school children whose parents fall on hard times and fall in the political cracks go HUNGRY at the Taxpayer funded PUBLIC SCHOOLS Nationwide. These monsters in control throw away tons of food from these taxpayer funded schools every year, and yet tell our hungry children too bad, you don’t QUALIFY for a meal.

You bend over backwards to be politically correct, too scared to say enough is enough, in case you offend. You put the retirement age up so people must work until they drop. THINGS NEED TO CHANGE!

Speak this truth if you have the guts to, it must be said! Each one save one from the veil that has blinded us to the TRUTH. There are enemies in our Highest Offices of our Land.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places

Just because YOU don’t believe
in the Rougarou; or the Loup Garou, don’t make you safe; No !

The Constitution is a blend of 'moral certitude' -- which is one of the reasons that criminals are determined to be rid of it and We the People must be even more determined to defend it.

Ok... it doesn't state anywhere in the article that the mother, who was arrested and charged, was under the influence of any drugs or alcohol...

I do believe it was wrong to leave the small children alone and unattended in their home however, regardless of drugs/alcohol etc...

But the Blackout was not her fault

Yeah, I'm not sure who/what caused the blackout...

It does state in the article though that the reason she was charged was that she left them both unsupervised...

"In a statement, the State of Alaska department of public safety said: "Julie Peter, 37 years old of Venetie, was arrested on one count of endangering the welfare of a minor in the first degree as a result of the investigation which revealed she deserted a five-year-old and 18-month-old in her home with no adult supervision."

Do you think a grizzly bear caused the blackout and waited to ambush wandering offspring abandoned by drugged up mothers? Maybe he was tired of scraps from the trash and after seeing the orange syringe caps in the driveway he hatched his little plan.

Could be in the carnivore playbook as wild-lands disappear with normal sources of food; maybe these children had a rare disease that makes their blood smell like peanut butter and cocoa entirely irresistible for a hungry bear, and by chomping some low hanging wires the neighborhood goes dark and he just picks them out of the snow like stuffed mushroom Hors d'oeuvres.

But it was probably just random wind or faulty wires or some such nonsense.

I know... it's pretty sad to hear of cases like this...

I think the children are brave and smart, the 5 year old at least, to have to make a massive decision like that, at such a young age all whilst taking on the responsibility of another babies life also...

Something tells me the 5 year old girl is wise beyond her years and she may have had to had made such decisions and take on a stronger role model before....

I had a temp job in a Rez town, and since I took my sons with me when I worked sometimes, had them with me at a house in this town. They befriended some local neighbor kids up the street. My son, 11 yo then, asked to go play at these two girl's house for a few minutes before dinner. I said sure, I would come get him when dinner was ready.

When I went to check on them, here is what I found...

No adults present... 2 sisters, the mothers, were drunk at the bar when I went looking for them.

Why would I do that... go looking for them?
Because when I went in their freezing house(in January), the only foods I found were days-old tater tots, still on tray, half pulled out of a cold oven.

The two little girls had been out sledding and were so cold they were crying... they had on light skirts with no leggings or socks in 25 F. temps., and the snow had topped their cheap rubber boots and gotten inside next to their feet, packing them in ice, basically.

No coats, no warm boots, cold house, no food, nobody there to give a d*m in any way... yah I was pissed and went looking for them.

Had the kids in my warm work truck, all cozy, and went into the bar, found the sisters... both very obese with warm clothing and a car they had driven to the bar in.

I will end the story here, and let your imagination go on what was said at that table in the bar. Let's just say the two sisters beat-foot it home from the bar in a quickness, and my kids never visited that house again.

A 5 year old is a child and not capable of decision making as cause and effect does for adults. Thats one reason why they require 24/7 supervision.

Sure some mature sooner than others but I would bet the great majority of 5 year olds around the world need an adult watching and protecting them.

Thats YOUR job as a parent and a good human being even if the 5 year old is not yours.

Yeah, I think all in all, if this story is true, (Still doesn't add up to me), small/young children do need supervised/taken care of at all times...

It doesn't matter if they can do things other's their age can or not...
When a child is scared, as such in this case, they may not be thinking straight and act fast, not giving second thought about the cold or the possibility of the dangers out there...

They just want their mother/father, someone who makes them feel safe etc...

Only heavens knows what was going through those 2 young children's minds at the time... I know they would have been terrified and freezing cold... I know this would be classed as a case of neglect in this case....

Another example I could use...

My child could and did learn to use a toaster, a grill, a kettle, dress himself properly and run his own bath at the age of 5...

However, just because he could, I still would not let him do it unattended...

I always made sure everything was safe for him and watched as well as encouraged/praised this behaviour...

If something were to go wrong, like an accident or something, he'd freak out and then the situation would only escalate from there... I knew this... so I always watched/never left him unattended when he wanted to do these things...

Still, a five year old girl on the loose like that with an 18 mths old during a blackout...

Must have been terrified...
 Quoting: ~Blue Spirit~

No. Not "terrified". The girl had it in her head that she had to go to her neighbors home. She was on a mission, determined and resolute. Not "terrified". This is an adult projection onto the child. The kid had no clue about the risks as adults do. All she knew was that going to the neighbors was the right thing to do.

I actually have real-world experience with this when I was 2 years old.

No shoes, but she might have had socks. Snow at that temp is very "dry".

I read once that northern european kids played outside in winter with less clothing on than adults would need

Kids have great circulation

And, as someone mentioned, that 5-year old was working her body hard to carry a toddler

It could be they aren't used to anything like what we consider "normal temps"... a body will adjust somewhat to a life at lower temps

I'm not saying minus 35 was comfortable or that they could have survived much longer without finding the neighbor.

Tough kids! And lucky! thank goodness

I speak from experience (having bern born as an unwanted child - (to teen parents) - San Francisco, California- mid 1960's - counter cultural movement)) I am who I am today - mainly due to concerned grandparents.

We had our one child late in life - after being married for 10 years - even then - it was not easy (but very worth it)) / she is 24 now - and completely self supporting.

Re: Girl, 5, Carries Toddler Half A Mile In - 35C With No Shoes On After Alaska Blackout!!
A few posters are mentioning how tough a 5 year old is and tromping through the snow at 35 below might be normal or okay for someone in the Arctic....I lived in Kotzebue AK and 35 below is cold even for people who grew up there. Small air taxi services have a minus 30 "cutoff" to operate because its too dangerous.

Keep in mind this is winter and that far north "daylight" is not what you see out your window right now while reading this....its more like twilight or darker.

What if she/he got lost going to the neighbors? We would be reading a different story and having a different response me thinks.
