You do understand that when you see the star go supernova that means that the light (including gamma radiation) has just reached us at THAT exact moment, right? It does not mean that once you see it happening that we wont feel the effects for another 600 years. It means that it happened roughly 600 years ago and the gamma spike is just about to hit us right behind seeing the event.
