Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78256331 A $15 Vacum UV light bulb (sub 254nm UV-C, for example 180ish nm) generates ozone. Just put that bulb in a cheap socket in a large OPAQUE (and closed)(UV-C is harmful, don't expose yourself to it at all) steralite container and plug it in outside for 30minutes with the object in the container. When done, unplug the socket from the mains then open the container and retrieve the object. The object is sterilized by both the uv-c light and the ozone it produced. Whole thing should cost you less than 30-40 bucks. This is another good idea. One of these days... A *REAL* rain is gonna come and wash all this scum off the streets. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 76010295 United States 02/09/2020 04:23 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have read a bit about the efficacy of OZONE regarding the killing of bacteria and viruses, so I went ahead and bout a 10,000MG/Hr Ozone generator and a nice sized clear plastic storage bin I intend to use as a sterilizing chamber. I've read many articles and it looks very promising. Quoting: Travis Bickle Here's one such article: [link to tuttnauer.com (secure)] So far it looks like the only issue I will have is perhaps over saturation of O3 on the elastic straps for the masks. If this thing TRULY goes off the hook in the coming weeks, many may be forced to "re-use" their masks due to lack of supplies. Which is a total NO-NO when dealing with viruses and such. Anyway, for what it's worth, I figured I would pass this info out to all of you and see if any of you have any other suggestions or see a problem with this. I'll be operating the generator in none confined spaces (Outside, maybe the garage with ventilation if it's rainy) and plan to pipe ALL of the concentrated Ozone into the box, thus saturating the masks for something in the 30 minute range. What do you think? (BTW, just about to get on the road for a 3hr trip so, I might not be seeing any posts until later this evening.) Stay safe everyone! As long as you go first. I will be a ways behind. But don’t let that stop you. It will just take me awhile to go through a case of 500 disposable masks. Four n95 masks with extra filters and 9 of the 3M respirators with P100 filters. But go ahead... start prepping now to use that ozone thing. |

It has to do with it being a metal, but also it's shape and having lots of close surfaces that can build a charge and spark to each other. I have heard of some fork tines causing issues as well but I haven't experienced that myself. I put stainless steel bowls, small aluminum pots, stainless spoons, drinking mugs with gold painted trim on them, and other metal items in the microwave all the time without issue. My last microwave lasted 25 years and was finally replaced after the buttons stopped working correctly. I would expect the nose clips and staples on a mask to be completely fine in a microwave. |

[link to www.amazon.co.uk (secure)] 70% is ideal. Above 90% and it actually becomes less effective because it dries out the outer surface of bacteria and viruses before it has a chance to fully penetrate and kill them. Less than 60% and effectiveness also drops rapidly. I always keep mine in a regular spray bottle, and I just spray any item I want to sterilize a few times and then let it air dry. It works great for sterilizing toothbrushes, dust masks, eliminating any smell from shoes, etc. Try out a few spray bottles in advance of when you will need them, because some spray mechanisms don't like having alcohol run through them. The spray trigger becomes sticky and doesn't want to return to the original position after spraying. It will still spray properly, but you might have to bang on the bottle a couple times after every spray to get the trigger to pop back out. |
