Hummus is very easy to make and goes with piping hot pita bread and maybe several kinds of wild edibles and some pickles like gerkins or marinated or hot peppers.

That is a nutritious but cheap meal.

All food should be organic, or at least non-GMO.
If you're ingesting glyphosate during your emergency, you're not going to stay healthy. I'd highly recommend some nutrient dense green powder and a tub of lard in addition to whatever else you can store. Quality of food and micronutrient quantity will outweight total calories in terms of health benefits conferred.

Good tips, thanks! Peanut butter is a good one; need to grab a tray of that.

Peanut butter has a massive ammount of all three kinds of caloric intake (Fat, Protien and carbs). It's shelf stable. Doesn't require cooking. Cheap to buy in bulk. It's one of the best survival foods.

Jasmine rice is what Thai or Iranian people eat and when I have served it, many guests like it better than standard short grain rice which is what Japanese or Chinese people eat. It has a delicious nutty flavor and a pleasant smell.

Brown rice is healthier but most don't like it.

Water = Most Important.

First, you will need water. Simple solutions are to have a gallon or two of bleach, and a reliable means of starting fire. For starting fire, you could rub sticks together, you could have a bunch of wax coated matches, a flint and steel or similar spark generator. I always also keep a bunch of disposable lighters on hand.

Here is a good guide for use of bleach and boiling water - [link to www.epa.gov (secure)]

Quick math - You measure perfectly and lose not a single drop

One gallon of bleach would purify 12,288 gallons of water.

Re: A Food Stockpile Guide for Normies
Recently I learned about a special kind of rice called PARBOILED rice. You can find it on Amazon. It's pricier than normal rice but it doesn't require any rinsing before cooking, whereas other long grain/basmati does. It comes as a long grain or a basmati. It sometimes goes by the name of "golden rice" or "sella rice".

 Quoting: Miss Pixie

You don't need to rinse white rice unless you got it from a place that polluted to an extreme. In US white rice is enriched with vitamins and nutrients. Rinsing will wash most of it away. Starch being a carb.. you're also rinsing more carbs away. Boiling will kill any bacteria or any nasty critters they may have found its home there.

In a survival situation.. using less water is best.

In relation to canned/tinned food...

Those 'EZ-Open' cans with the pull ring are not viable for long-term storage. That scored section in the top that facilitates 'EZ-Open' is thinner than the can material and is prone to early failure.

I have experienced failure of these types of cans after only a couple of years. Hams, soup, beans, etc. That thin, 'EZ-Open' score line is a weak point in the integrity of the can.
 Quoting: Crunch62

You know what I cleaned my pantry today and threw away about 20 cans with the EZ pull tab cause it looked a bit idk ‘rusty’, I didn’t like the look of it, didn’t want my family to eat that so in the bin they went.

IF you believe that there will be little to no impact on services OR if you're already self reliant when it comes to electricity/refrigeration....

Buy eggs. In the carton as you buy them from the market, they'll stay edible for as long as 6 months.

Re: A Food Stockpile Guide for Normies
Here's what you need, and the reasons for each one.

Peanut Butter - Long shelf life, High energy density. Contains fats, protiens and carbohydrates.

Tinned Meats - Dense source of protiens. Easy to prepare. Chunk tuna, chicken, sardines. Avoid SPAM, if possible, it's really high in sodium and will require more liquid intake.

Tinned Veggies - Long self life. Easy to prepare.

Crackers - Again, long shelf life. Goot for putting either of the above on.

Bulk dried rice - Seeing a pattern here? Long shelf life. Relatively easy to prepare.

Powdered Milk or UHT milk - Good source of calcium and vit D.

Lifestraw - Drinkable water is a must, and storing water in bulk takes up a ton of space. A lifestraw will make just about any water biologicly safe, as long as you don't have to worry about chemical impurities, it woun't remove - for example - benzene or other petrochemical pollutants.

And finally remember, you're not going for a balanced diet here. You want things that are shelf-stable, easy to prepare, and easy to store in bullk.

Don't forget a propane camp stove, plenty of paper plates, cups and utinsels. Garbage bags and toilet paper.

Also: If you're a hunter/fisher you might be thinking "Oh, I'm just going to grab my sack and go innawoods and live off the land." Sorry to burst your bubble but you and every other "outdoorsman" is thinking the same thing. Nobody is going to care about catch limits or tagging your deer. The woods and streams will be cleared of anything edible within a month in a real SHTF situation.

Easy to grow vegetable seeds, field peas are the easiest, they will grow almost anywhere. Get the fastest growing vegetables, one being mixed greens or lettuce, the others are what will hold over winter, as in winter squash, etc. You can dry vegetables in the sun which will keep them if you can not do canning. You can do fruit or wild berries or tame for that matter. Any root crops that can be planted like Jerusalem artichoke are similar to potatoes in taste and use, you just take what you need out of the grow and leave the others until you need them, they are small sunflower type, plant a few rows short or long, so you do not run out, keep a some to regrow the next year. They are good for people with diabetes, instead of potatoes.

Always save your own seeds, black eyes peas from the store will grow and good as any seeds, so will other dry beans. Pinto makes good green beans to eat. Beets are easy to grow and good or you.
 Quoting: hankie

Assuming you have to space this is a great idea. Especially if you're out in the middle of nowhere. I live in an urban area and the last time I tried to start a garden if the stray dogs weren't tearing shit up neighbors would steal every tomato I had. In a real SHTF scenario you'd need to guard your plants 24-7 with a shot gun :(
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77633874

Better to do survival gardening where the plants are hidden within plain sight. Not traditional garden that will cause an extra job of guard the garden.

The first significant wild edible of spring are samaras from maple trees.

There are lots of goofy people who will tell you pure nonsense as yeah, you can eat wild edibles, but they have scant calories. Thus you would use more energy looking for them, and processing them, then you would gain in digested them.

You need to be an opportunist hunter-gatherer and NOT waste energy when you lack proper food in your pantry. Otherwise, that is how new inexperienced people starve to death.

It basically will show you where there are free tapped springs located in different jurisdictions in Canada and United States as well as some other locations on the Globe... posted by regular Joe's. I thought it may be of interest if anyone here is looking for something that may be posted near your residence.

Re: A Food Stockpile Guide for Normies
Your next historically significant wild edible, eaten around the world by various tribes is white clover which is a protein source to boost your soups and stews. The red clover blossom is more useful as a tea.

The Irish collected the white clover heads and this allowed them to stretch their limited flour. That still is a perfectly fine bread that does not detract from the flavor.

Absorb what is useful and easily accomplished that produces the most calories and nutrition with the least effort and requires very little knowledge and minimal processing.

Otherwise you will be chasing down a lot of things like violet leafs which help with vitamins but with miniscule calories.

Be practical.

Ramen noodles, they’re cheap, full of calories, and last forever. If you want to take out the sodium just don’t use the seasoning packet or very little. You can also eat them dry and uncooked straight out of the bag.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77414571

They are light if you have to hike somewhere. Also take some multi-vitamins.
 Quoting: Nuke Dukem

Flavor packets usually very high in MSG. I like to flavor with salt and Ghee butter. Sometimes I’ll use vinaigrette dressing. Ramen noodles and chili is a good combo. Also rice and chili.

You ever live out in the woods or even at home for a whole month or two ...without using anything made available like water, electricity, gas, etc...

Try it before you give advice and get some poor soul killed.

I will say again...the very first thing you need is rifles and shot gun with lots of ammo (think security and safety in times of crises or lawlessness).

Study the events of Hurricane Katrina and you will know what I am talking about.

All the killing and ravaging, raping, looting were done by gangs, criminal, cons, psychos, druggies, desperate loners, dirty cops, thugs, and opportunist who were able to get firearms and subdue their victims without and resistance.

But I am just an IDIOT so please don't take my advice...

Went to get something from CVS today. (Allergy meds cause I was low.

wearing my mask and goggles got me lots of stares. But that was not what I was really concerns about.

the pharmacy line was insanely long. NEVER SEEN IT LIKE THAT BEFORE. Also, ever fucken healthy care item was on sale. Half the store. It was crazy to say the least.

Fuck if I know, Something is up...

Propane cannot be used indoors.
Butane can be used indoors with a little ventilation. So go for a camp stove that uses butane. Cooking outdoors would be a last resort for me as it will draw attention.

Propane can be used indoors.

My home (and millions of others) uses an unvented propane range/oven.

My former employer used a propane fueled floor scrubber inside the school hallways, as it was approved for use indoors.

Life straws and the better BERKEY products are not in enought production to do much now.. a few may be able to acquire them... I have a Berkey.. as to water.. consider where you live... and the risk of what would destroy the delivery of water.

There is not enough bottled water out there to deliver in dire circumstance. I suggest storing BULK WATER now for consumption at least... And trash cans or something to gather off the roof it that did become necessary and to figure out what to do IF there is no water to flush your toilets. Hint. PEE IN YOUR DRAINS and PLUG THEM because of odor.

I had 6 interesting days once a few years ago with no water and thus got to test my plans.

where does that brown stuff go?
