I'm a nurse of over 30 years, married to a physician for more than that. I became a nurse to help people.

I know that if I follow infection control protocols, I am safe. It's not people like me that we have to worry about, it's dumb fucks like those who when the going gets tough, they want to stay home.

If your chances of death were highly likely, your training would tell you not to go into the building. Doctors and Nurses would be told the opposite, they would be commanded to take great personal risk and go into a building.

If healthcare workers are provided with the appropriate equipment to prevent transmission you might have a point. Otherwise it is purely idiotic to expect a person to do a job that puts them and their family at unnecessary risk because of incompetent planning and reckless leadership.

I would bet that these noble retired folks probably volunteered their services if needed. We ALL know the SNOWFLAKE generation just can't handle it. They will self infect themselves from lack of knowledge & panic & then the retired healthcare workers will be needed.

Here's my moral argument.

If you have serious health problems. You can't risk it, and you should go into isolation.

If you are the only care giver of a child, you should not go.

If your employer refuses to provide you with every personal protective gear that you need to stay healthy, you should not go.

Otherwise, if you are trained and your safety is protected , you are obligated to help.

Most first responders will take care of their families, or gather together with other first responders to support one another. This was polled throughout the USofA right after 9/11.

A course was created to try and 'change' that mind set (I still have the textbook I received) saying that first responders would be transported to different regions to work-not in their own cities/towns. That went over like a lead balloon. No first responder would leave their family, voluntarily or by force. A huge "conspiracy theory" was then created to say the info from that course was BS, when it was 100% fact.

I need to find the text for the correct title. That was almost 20 years ago, and I'm old now.

I would if I was provided the correct protective gear. Sadly I don't think this is happening in many hospitals.

When you choose to go into the medical field you make a choice to take with bad with the good.

I have to amend my comment..."No first responder IN MY CLASS, would leave their family." That was eye witnessed by me, and several 'students' became rather vocal and agitated when told they will be forced. This was also the same response all over the country, in that class. Last I heard, it failed miserably.

Akin to the USMC being polled on "would you follow the orders to confiscate by force the arms from American citizens". A resounding NO was the answer.

Retired nurse here. Personally, I would continue working as I did for 30 years...sick, on holidays, overtime, etc. That said, if I were young with kids and a family, I believe if shit got too bad I would have to consider my family above my "duty". Sorry...
