The problem is that the FED is now allowed to accept hard assets from the Treasury department as collateral for liquidity. This has never been done before and is bad fuckin news. It used to be illegal for a reason.

Good question. There are about 28 'primary dealers' that attend the federal reserve's bond auctions that auction off new debt issued by US treasury.

Some of these banks are foreign banks, most are commercial US banks. To purchase any new bond at an auction, the bank must use 'federal reserve credit'. The get the federal reserve credit the banks have to post AAA collateral, so they post the bonds they are going to buy at the auction as the collateral.

You might say, that's like a Ponzi scheme. I would say, yes it is.
