He was the the guy who pointed out the left and right were just two puppets on the hands of ONE evil puppeteer. And his rant about Clinton? You've never seen those I suppose...he ranted about the right just as much. Bill Hicks was a solid independent thinker. His mind had been opened too much by psychedelics too be confined to the small tunnel visions of mainstream thinking and politics. |

Quoting: Wharf Rat Well, you know what that implies? There's a war going on...and people on drugs are winning it!" Bill was GenX’s Carlin! Denis Leary and Sam Kinison both stole bits from Bill in Houston... Denis’ career was jumpstarted by his No Cure For Cancer Record... “Although Leary had been friends with fellow comedian Bill Hicks for many years, when Hicks heard No Cure For Cancer, he felt that Leary had stolen his act. The friendship ended abruptly as a result, and was still unsettled when Hicks died of pancreatic cancer 13 months later, at the age of 32. Over the years, several comedians have publicly stated they believe Leary stole Hicks' persona and attitude, in addition to his material. Jokes on the album about Keith Richards, Judas Priest, smoking and "good men dying young" are frequently cited as bearing similarities to Hicks' routines.” |

But give Leary credit, he was funnier on the delivery. Hicks was kind of hateful at times... I liked some of his work but he really was a douche to the common man. He wasn't as educated as the airs he put on. His beliefs, comedy and lifestyle were very much at odds with each other. Leary is an asshole, but a likable asshole. They all steal, borrow whatever but some are just blatant douchebags. Everything has been said before... Very true... but back then, pre-internet, a comedian could make a living off of a 45 minute set... comedians stealing bits is nothing new but it was much more easier and thus rampant back then... take a drive across the country, pick up some jokes and drive them back.... Hopefully Wharf Rat knows I’m not trying to derail... So yeah another good example is Tulsa Oklahoma DJs from KMOD stealing a prank caller character from Tennessee, then subsequently took all the credit and made a veritable fortune from Roy D Mercer CD sales....and never once gave the real guy any credit...reminds me of all the cover songs in 1980s that were “hits” because MTV made them hits... They all do not steal, some not but you can't say they all do. Leary would have NO career if he had not stolen hicks whole act and persona, only leary was more an obnoxious clown. Leary would never have gotten as popular and known as he did if he did not totally steal hicks's act. And leary is a multi millionaire with a long career now... and it is all built on him being a shit ass poor comic and a thief. |
