Re: Become Food Independent using Wood Chips as ground cover
I'm a small scale vegetable farmer. I tried this. It DESTROYED the fertility of the 2000 square feet of garden I experimented with for 3 years running now.

Year 1: Worked ok. Suppressed weeds somewhat. Not nearly as good as the hype. I put the wood-chips 4 or 5 inches deep around established annuals.

Year 2: Despite valiant attempts to plant while keeping wood-chips at surface level, it became obvious quite a lot made it to subsurface levels. ANYWHERE wood-chips were covering, or were even nearby, plants were NOTICEABLY smaller, weaker, and often failed to produce at all, or were dramatically less productive.

Year 3: Raked off as many wood-chips as I could. Plants were still smaller than those in areas I treated as standard.

Apparently conventional science is right in this instance. Decomposing wood (or anything else) takes and holds nitrogen. And based on my results, I would suspect quite a lot of other nutrients.

If you don't like manual weeding (and who does?) I suggest getting a wheel hoe. I prefer the Hoss, but there are several good brands out there. Don't believe this back to Eden crap from people whose survival and future depends on the productivity of their gardens.

^^^^^^^^^^ This.

Thanks for your input, I’ve heard this about wood chips before. One look at the guy in the video and I was suspicious (he just has that ‘look’), then he started blathering and removed any lingering doubts I had about this “Back to Eden” BS.

The Hoss wheel hoe is about the best thing anyone with a decent size garden can purchase, the investment will pay for itself many times over. Hoss makes a planter, as well, that’s highly recommended.

Re: Become Food Independent using Wood Chips as ground cover
i get the electric company's tree trimmings.
they usually smell like a giant pile of cherries..

ive been using the wood chips in my cat boxes and i tell ya, if they pee in it, you cannot smell it.
just regular wood chips.
when they poop, its right on top because its too chunky of pieces to dig into and that is easily taken out.
the urine is breaking down the chips below but the wood on top is dry and odor free.

ive tried sand, litter, newspaper, even the cedar pellets.
nothing has kept the odor contained except the wood chips.
and when i need to renew the chips, its already started breaking down and i put them around the flower beds where i dont walk.

wish i knew this when i was a teenager..

Good info,

Also look up “Teaming with Microorganisms”

Fairly simple idea, make a bacterial culture from soil of a successful plant you want to grow. Mix the multiplied culture into your own soil before planting. PROFIT

Re: Become Food Independent using Wood Chips as ground cover
In regards to best things to use in a compost get kudzu leaves if you live in the south.

The plant is high in nitrogen and the leaves will not produce kudzu without vines or roots.

This with some chicken crap or rabbit crap and some brown leaves will practically catch on fire as it kicks off.

I have taken a 4 foot tall piece of wire fence and make a round bail out of the wire about the diameter of a 50 gallon drum. You can take the fence piece apart in order to stir it etc.

Additionally since kudzu is so abundant you can just pick leaves and turn them into your garden to compost.

I just started using screened ground cover designed for commercial gardens.

The stuff is amazing you just roll it out, stake it down and cut with scissors.

If you want to plant in it you take a propane torch and burn holes where you want to plant.

No more weeds stuff is awesome.

Re: Become Food Independent using Wood Chips as ground cover
Yeah I like that guy. Mulch is the key to gardening. Ruth Stout books about gardening with mulch are the best. Mulch is everything, whether it's wood chips or hay or whatever.

Now someone who is doing things intensively on a commercial scale may do things differently. If you are a market grower then you can't do better than to look up Curtis Stone and see what his methods are. But he is in and out of his beds in a matter of weeks with succession crops one after the other. They are never left to their own devices like you probably want to do with your home garden.
 Quoting: Vision Thing

Yep. Curtis is very much a niche guy, but it's a solid niche.

I've been a Ruth Stout fan forever. Best heavy mulch I ever had was peanut hulls. Man, those were fantastic. We're getting wood chips in here now. Also, if people have sawmills near them, you can get sawdust for free usually. But it isn't the best for the Back to Eden style because the green is removed. But it still works great in a heavy layer at adding tilth to the soil and suppressing weeds.

Raw wood chips would acidify the pH and bind nitrogen. Rotten idea.

Do hugelkulture instead.
