Become Food Independent using Wood Chips as ground cover | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 51752123 United States 05/11/2020 05:11 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm a small scale vegetable farmer. I tried this. It DESTROYED the fertility of the 2000 square feet of garden I experimented with for 3 years running now. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73012045 Year 1: Worked ok. Suppressed weeds somewhat. Not nearly as good as the hype. I put the wood-chips 4 or 5 inches deep around established annuals. Year 2: Despite valiant attempts to plant while keeping wood-chips at surface level, it became obvious quite a lot made it to subsurface levels. ANYWHERE wood-chips were covering, or were even nearby, plants were NOTICEABLY smaller, weaker, and often failed to produce at all, or were dramatically less productive. Year 3: Raked off as many wood-chips as I could. Plants were still smaller than those in areas I treated as standard. Apparently conventional science is right in this instance. Decomposing wood (or anything else) takes and holds nitrogen. And based on my results, I would suspect quite a lot of other nutrients. If you don't like manual weeding (and who does?) I suggest getting a wheel hoe. I prefer the Hoss, but there are several good brands out there. Don't believe this back to Eden crap from people whose survival and future depends on the productivity of their gardens. ^^^^^^^^^^ This. Thanks for your input, I’ve heard this about wood chips before. One look at the guy in the video and I was suspicious (he just has that ‘look’), then he started blathering and removed any lingering doubts I had about this “Back to Eden” BS. The Hoss wheel hoe is about the best thing anyone with a decent size garden can purchase, the investment will pay for itself many times over. Hoss makes a planter, as well, that’s highly recommended. |

Mix the multiplied culture into your own soil before planting. PROFIT you know what i always find the coolest things. those closed systems they have in some bunkers. where they have fish in water with plants and those feed of something else and that in turn feeds veggies etc. forgot the name hydrofarm? There is a guy who has a school and books about this in Arizona. Gardenpool.org I think? |

The plant is high in nitrogen and the leaves will not produce kudzu without vines or roots. This with some chicken crap or rabbit crap and some brown leaves will practically catch on fire as it kicks off. I have taken a 4 foot tall piece of wire fence and make a round bail out of the wire about the diameter of a 50 gallon drum. You can take the fence piece apart in order to stir it etc. Additionally since kudzu is so abundant you can just pick leaves and turn them into your garden to compost. I just started using screened ground cover designed for commercial gardens. The stuff is amazing you just roll it out, stake it down and cut with scissors. If you want to plant in it you take a propane torch and burn holes where you want to plant. No more weeds stuff is awesome. |

Ruth Stout books about gardening with mulch are the best. Mulch is everything, whether it's wood chips or hay or whatever. Quoting: Vision Thing Now someone who is doing things intensively on a commercial scale may do things differently. If you are a market grower then you can't do better than to look up Curtis Stone and see what his methods are. But he is in and out of his beds in a matter of weeks with succession crops one after the other. They are never left to their own devices like you probably want to do with your home garden. Yep. Curtis is very much a niche guy, but it's a solid niche. I've been a Ruth Stout fan forever. Best heavy mulch I ever had was peanut hulls. Man, those were fantastic. We're getting wood chips in here now. Also, if people have sawmills near them, you can get sawdust for free usually. But it isn't the best for the Back to Eden style because the green is removed. But it still works great in a heavy layer at adding tilth to the soil and suppressing weeds. Things are bad enough, there is no need to make anything up. ~Fluffy "Never interrupt an enemy in the process of destroying himself." Quercitin and zinc...Get it. Take it.
