That's because it wasn't detected by anyone before impact. 1998 OR2 is a known asteroid and I have independently tracked it. Here is my astrometric data and orbit determination.

They couldn't hide this information even if they wanted to. People like me have independently tracked it. You can't hide the information on a known asteroid.

This thread claims that they did that and that they suddenly changed the miss distance on a very well-known and very well-tracked asteroid at the last possible minute. That isn't plausible at all. If they had lied about how much it was going to miss by we would have already known that because of independent observations. There's a difference between an asteroid striking us that was never detected and an asteroid striking us that was detected but they somehow covered up the true close approach distance.

That's just your opinion.

Given the amount of effort I've put into tracking this asteroid and even giving away free software to help others track it I think I've earned the right to be a bit smug when you assholes attack me with threads like this. That's not going to happen. I don't think you understand how orbits work. 16.4 times the distance to the moon, that is the miss distance. I don't think you have any concept for how huge that is. And I don't think you have any concept for how quickly the asteroid is traveling. Trying to divert it into an impact trajectory before April 29th would take more than just a nudge that we could administer even with a nuke. There is zero chance that this hits Earth.

So Mut can you prove your software works to the extent you brag about? Any qualified results? Any independent assessments? I've extensive experience so maybe show me your commented source code, algorithms, data blocks, any SFCs or your GPS drivers and let me analyse and see if you've created anything worthwhile. You're such a brat you miss my point...which is you'd get a lot more people listening to what you have to say if you didn't act like a bratty spoilt girl.

As for proof that my software works, I will track the asteroid one more time on Monday night using the orbital elements that I calculated from my own measurements made with my software. If my software worked then the asteroid should be right where my software predicts it to be, otherwise the asteroid won't be there and you can claim victory. Let's see who ends up being right...

And for completeness, here is my near Earth asteroid tracking software that I will use to control the telescope. The software I posted in the video above was about determining the orbit of the asteroid, while this program is designed to track an asteroid whose orbit is already known. I will track it based on my personal orbit determination and we will see if the asteroid ends up being where my calculations predict.
