In China you had the first phase which was extended civil war followed by ham-handed collectivism. Then to cover up the massive failure of the that (“the Great Leap Forward”), they had the cultural revolution, which was about 10 years.

In “classical” communist systems like the USSR or China you have revolution proper (armies, guns, civil war), then the first implementation phase, where everything is fucked up and millions die of starvation (great leap forward, Stalin’s de-Kulakization efforts). Then you have a second period of ideological hysteria (Cultural rev, Stalinist purges). Then comes the long road back to “sanity,” which might take 3 or 4 decades to plop you down in a milder but still unpleasant form of insantity.

Then there are places like Cambodia, where the whole process gets compressed into 5-10 years and half the population dies.

This is the kind of insight I was curious about: what people who had lived under communism think of the Western slide towards leftism today.
I lived in a “pre-communist” nation in the early 1970s and left just before the country went actual-communist. I was very lucky.

Yes, was 14 when communism was abolished. Still remember staying in queue for 2 hours to buy bread on ration cards or 2 days of waiting to get the dead chicken (yep, dead for various reason and not suitable to export so they would be sold to populations that would fight for that meat.. Meat meat meat).
You would even have to stay in line for toilet paper, remember it was more like sand paper haha. Ratio cards were common for nearly any food product. Clothing was hard to get too and so on. Purchasing power was very very low, the only car you could buy (on a waiting list) was a model that failed decades ago at Renault and Romania purchased the patent (Dacia 1300) was outdated even in the 60s but was produced all the way to early 90s. This car would cost you full wage for 5 years.

What else I forgot? Ooo the cold! Winters were hars, heat was centralised but never on, government would ask us to dress more. Remember as a kid would sleep dressed in a ski suit not a pijama. Otherwise u would get sick. Electricity outage was scheduled winter or summer.
More that I can talk, but this was the basics of the communist world. And if you would criticise it or try to escape it you would have a misterios accident or u would disappear never to be seen again. Protect your freedom guys, it is worthed!

Unlike today life was safe and crime-free, what I miss most especially for children.

It is the overall indebtedness dragging your society towards some kind of dictatorship. Was you debt-free and employed people would not push for socialism.

Each country meets doom in its own way. The US doom will take the form of dollar collapse/hyperinflation IMHO. It will also damage many other countries as it falls.

It has been a big mistake judging countries on their ex-pats. America is no paradise either. There are problems everywhere.

I lived only till I was 6. It all ended in 1991. My parents remember everything. They were not involved in communism, because they are Christians.

I have never been to Romania, so take it with a grain of salt. But there was an anecdote around the time they killed Ceausescu that had him say those who followed will not be able to paint what he built.

Romania's current external debt is about 120 billion USD.

I traveled in Hungary in '91, just years after the fall of the Wall. People were fascinated by a westerner. I hitch hiked at the time, and always got rides, and they even took me back to their places for refreshments. They were generally good, hard working people, with their own farms out back in the yard.

Ten years later, the farms were gone, most worked in the City, and they were much colder.

I am not sure if this about Melania's parents was a joke, but her father was a card carrying member of the communist party, and both parents had good jobs. Her father might have even been an executive of sorts.

They hated Christians, my parents were not able to get gold medal after schools only because they were Christians. Christians were not able to get good jobs, because if you are not in communist party, you are nothing. My dad was beaten in army because he signed a paper, that he is Christian and not going to touch weapons. I'm just like him, and never had a gun and never will.
