Maybe they did downplay it to keep Trump supporters from lining the streets waving signs and flags as Biden’s motorcade goes by, as has happened elsewhere.

You could be onto something. Most people I come in contact with won’t tell who they are going to vote for. Although I was swayed to Trump, I still answered Biden in the polls cause I felt sorry for him.
