Re: Would you be an English teacher in Japan?
The problem isn't the drunks, layabouts and unaware of self recent graduates. That happens almost everywhere. The problem is that the teachers are for the most part plain dumb. They are exploited, and used and don't realize that they can be replaced by practically anyone with a pulse. The ALTs, TOEICs, TEFLs, TOEFLs, "Business English" ones are the worst because they actually believe they have some kind of skill. It takes special kind of dumb.

They ARE dancing monkeys.

I think it would be great to live in Japan or S. Korea and not have to worry about violence, thugs ,crime or corrupt cops. I dont care what anyone else bitches about Japan or S. Korea. If a woman can go to a club and walk home alone at 2am safely, it must be heaven

Re: Would you be an English teacher in Japan?
Your average Japanese citizen gets 12+ years in written English, then takes it while in a university as well. Their conversational English isn't very good as they are not encouraged to personally excel. "The nail that sticks up, will be hammered down" is an expression there.

If going, you should know you will be constantly judged as westerners are very individualistic. You would have to be very discrete there. I would bet you would really grow to dislike it.

It is wretchedly expensive there and so it doesn't matterwhat they pay if everything is 4 to 10 times more expensive, right?

They have 3 languages and one is symbolic language where an educated personmemorized 150,000 symbols. Nothing in English is close. Imagine trying to memorize 150,000 Egyptian hierogylphics. That's just an average college educated person.

They are incredibly studious in high school, but then once in their universities, they tend to relax and take tike off for "a western experience" that they hope makes them suitable in whatever business that will international exposure. So an excellent command of the written and oral elements of English is a big deal there.

Often slang and idioms are mistranslated as even with all that experience, it's easy to make mistakes, or our foreign concepts are nonsensical to them.

The most abysmal dating happens in Japan as so many are disinterested, and ladies fret that any chance of finding a romantic husband who is a genuije prospect is nearly nonexistant. Some flat out won't date anyone who is not Japanese as they see no future in the relationship. They also doubt you are seriously inclined.

I can't think of one good reason to teach English in Japan especially post-Fukushima.

If doing this just because you want to meet Asian ladies and you are a Christian, I suggest you save yourself the hassle and visit a Korean American Baptist church. You'll thank me. They are prettier, already devout, and sweet natured...usually with a great figure too and old fashioned.

Do not toy with them. These are serious Christian ladies looking for husbands, not boyfriends.

Maybe for a year to experience life in Japan. But dont get stuck there. The salary is shit, no pay rise for 20 years, still only 250k yen a month.

They are used to Gaijin's too, so there is no 'hero' factor anymore.

Re: Would you be an English teacher in Japan?
I m in Osaka and Narita regularly and have been for the last 25 years.

Japan is very organized and consistent, right or wrong the people are helpful and reliable.

A coworker was an English teacher there some 20 odd years ago, married and now have strong family ties to JP.

I m sure there are parts I do not see fortunately but for a male I would not miss the chance if offered.

As for a female I do not know if I would suggest it either or not without more investigation.
