There is a sign to the entrance of our subdivision that says to boil our water before we drink it. We have bottled water on hand as well - we always do. I hope the water from the faucet is safe for the animals.

I have several friends whose water lines broke. It such a sad time to see so many dealing with such troubles. It reminds me of hurricane Harvey.

OP, the boil notice is not due to "a bacteria".

The requirement to boil is due to higher water demand from faucets running 24X7 while freezing and then open running through major pipes bursting when we started to thaw.

The water treatment cannot keep up with demand. For safety, the option is boil or have no water.

This is common, and if you are a couple decades old and paying attention, you've been through these demand-pressure-sanitation-boil issues in Houston.

This is not...and I repeat is not...because the system has been compromised by some specific bacteria.

We're in Midland. We have a water well. Pipes or something froze last Sunday, even though I had water running in the kitchen and a bathroom. It was 7 degrees outside at the time. Our power has been on since some time last night, thank goodness.

I have heat sources, so we managed on that score. And I had about 30 gallons of water stored. We've been on strict water rationing. Went to son's house in town today and refilled bottles. It may be well into next week before we can get the plumbing thawed out and fixed.

Where are you located, Newton? Ive heard that Abilene, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, Corpus and Houston all have water system problems. Probably lots of others too. Prayers been going up for everyone in TX - this weather is truly Biblical. I've been in TX since 1961 and never seen the whole state frozen up like this. Unbelievable.

Very odd... it is usually chemical treatment that kills the contaminants and the cold wouldn't be an issue.
The system must be more compromised than normal maybe frozen filters etc.
