Q I have heard or read that turning on the ignition or lights for a short time before attempting to start a very cold car will make it easier to start. Is there any truth to this? If so, please explain why and say what procedure you recommend for starting.

A Fact or urban legend? In this case, it's fact. In extremely cold conditions, turning the headlights on for about 10 seconds before trying to start your vehicle can help the battery deliver a bit more cranking amperage, which in turn will increase the cranking speed of the engine, which improves the chances of the engine starting.

One in five of Europe’s bird species slipping towards extinction

The common swift, common snipe and rook are among species slipping towards extinction in Europe, according to the continent’s latest “red list” report, which finds that one in five bird species is now at risk.

From the Azores in the west to the Ural mountains in the east, birds that have been the cornerstones of European ecosystems are disappearing, according to the BirdLife International analysis, which is based on observations of 544 native bird species. Three species have become regionally extinct in Europe since the last report in 2015 – Pallas’s sandgrouse, common buttonquail and pine bunting.

Coronal Hole streams incoming ~ Monday

A couple of coronal holes, most notably large CH #13, will be turning into an Earth facing position over the next several days. A coronal hole stream is predicted to reach Earth beginning Monday, October 18th and lead to a geomagnetic enhancement at higher latitudes. Depending on if the coronal hole maintains its size over the next week, the solar wind influence could be productive enough to lead to a geomagnetic storm. More updates later this weekend.
