Trillions of cicadas are about to emerge after 17 years underground in United States | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 79298659 United States 05/02/2021 03:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yes, they do and there are many man lures that imitate them is some way, like for instance buzz-baits and propeller type lures.. The problem is if there is a large emergence they're not going to likely key off on your lure that looks like one. They work best during the spring when there isn't a big emergence in my experience. The bass will gorge on them if their are large numbers and be difficult to catch. True, but you can catch other pan fish and carp during these times that are keying in on the Cicadas. I have caught Carp with topwater lures when its happening. Carp are considered to be bottom feeders and for the most part they are, but they will eat anything they can catch and swallow including insects and minnows in my own persona experience I have caught them on topwater lures a few times, but I suspect they were spawning and just trying to kill the lure or drive it off.. When there is a big shad die off they gorge on them too. They also eat dead or dying crayfish. Most of what they eat is plant material, they are opportunistic feeders |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80230747 The funniest thing is when a cat gets a hold of one. The Cicada buzzes and the cat growls back at it. If you try to get one from a cat it will rip you to shreds too. It is my belief that the cat is deriving some type of pleasure from holding the cicada live in it's mouth as it buzzes. The one thing I noticed is they take a long time to kill one, sometimes over an hour.. |

It doesn't only happen at 17yr intervals. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 44883436 Yeah I don't see what the big deal is. And how do they know the count? because the brood is the largest of the hatches, some hatch at different intervals but none are as large as this one. |

User ID: 77504359 United States 05/02/2021 03:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I could SWEAR this event happened when my 15 year old daughter was 2. I know that we were aware of it being a thing, and that the place was covered with cicadas, and that she was toddling around and I was freaked out by her trying to pick up dead ones on the ground. I must be wrong. Anyway ... hallelujah! There's nothing better to remind us where we are than natures big cycles. This is a good length cycle for remembering our place. Beautiful. When the shit hits the fan and the end is just nigh, will you cry out to Heaven? Will you lie down and die? Not me, my dear one - THIS IS MY SACRED LIFE - to no one nor no thing I'll surrender. For how does one know where when dead she will go, or if sweet Mother Earth he'll remember? - Sug |

Quoting: LobsterJ It probably won't even be where you are. Go and look up the USDA county by county map: [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] This is basically only for Indiana, western Ohio, south central Pennsylvania, and north central Maryland. Also includes Long Island, Delaware, a little bit of eastern Tennessee, a few counties in southern Michigan, and a few counties in Northern Virginia. Excellent map. Answers a lot of questions. Is truth found here? |

Quoting: BBQ BOY™ Well, in that case, I suppose if you are a coughing your lungs up and pissing kidney stones, all without being able to achieve a boner and experiencing a condition which makes you believe your ticker is about to give up, feeling like you couldn't crush a grape, walking as if you have imbibed a full bottle of scotch, finding it extremely difficult to hear the trouble and strife bollocking you because of the ringing in your ears and all this whilst becoming so thin, that you only have one stripe on your pyjamas, then Cordyceps militaris and it's uses, is a blessing in disguise. |

My daughter likes collecting the sheded shells. Gross! The newly emerged ones are actually pretty cute though. It’s alway noisy and they are everywhere! This article is more fear mongering bs. Quoting: Lil08 Yes indeed. I grew up just south of Pittsburgh. Our summers were spent gathering locust shells from the trees and listening to their wonderful “ song” every night. Some summers gave us lots of skeletons and lots of noise. Looks like this one will be a noisy one. Whoever is trying to freak everyone out about this is foolish and totally ignorant of this phenomenon. Relax. They are harmless and wonderful. |
