She was charged because she lied to get the prescription in the first place, if she had told her doctor and that doctor gave her the prescription anyway she wouldn't have had any problem. It's because she lied, fraudulently obtaining a presecription is illegal. Odds are she had tried her regular doctor who told her no and wound up lying to the orthapedist to get it. Regardless of personal opinions or anything else this story isn't about a mom who was charged because she filled a prescription, that's fake news. I'm not blaming the OP but rather the site that ran with that headline because it's bullshit. She was charged for lying to obtain a prescription. Whether she took them or not doesn't matter, whether she needed them or not doesn't matter and whether she was pregnant or not doesn't even matter. It's her own fault for lying and since the baby tested positive for opiates she must have taken some even though the article tries to obfuscate that fact. That kid could be addicted for the rest of his or her life and could even have died. To make matters worse, problems might develop in the child now that otherwise never would have. The woman is in pain, I get it but seriously she's a mother of six she should know better.

One cannot use NSAIDs during the last trimester of pregnancy, because that causes serious problems. Hydrododone does not pose any harm at all.

This is my area where I live. We have pain clinics we have to go to to get narcotics and they aren't all super easy to obtain. My mom had osteoarthritis and could barely move without hers, and we went in once a month for appointments.

Because she was in a wheelchair and could not pee in a bottle, they used an alternative test. About 2/3rds of the time, I was pee tested (I never took her meds, and never failed a test). My 70 year old mother was asked every time if she was pregnant on the questionnaire you had to fill out.

I had my tubes tied 10 years ago and I get asked at every doctor's visit regardless of the reason when my last period was, if I am pregnant or could be and how many times I have ever been pregants. It's on the paperwork you fill out every time, no matter your age. It is on it for my primary care, when I got my gallbladder out and even my dermatologist asks it.

Now, you may be able to get them from a doctor short term, but they all refer you to a pain clinic for long term management or a doctor you see is part of the network and those doctors are very strict on those Rxs and generally will refer you ASAP to the pain clinic. It's like surgeons...you can get pain meds for the surgery for about a month, but if it is chronic you get referred pretty fast to a pain clinic.

There are a couple of things here that are not being addressed to figure out if this was Lauderdale being overly zealous or if she really did something hinky. Here, you get a 30 day supply and have to go in for more. She used them for the last 6 weeks...so did she go in visibly pregnant where it was obvious, or did she make her meds last longer? When she got the meds is also going to be an issue...if she went in before it was obvious she was pregnant and saved them for the later pregnancy or if she went in a 7 and a half month pregnant is also going to be an issue.

We're hearing one side of the story. I know DAs are both overzealous in prosecutions and lenient on similar cases, but there are a few questions that aren't being answered that can spin it one way or the other.
