You can fire an employer just as fast as they can fire you. There's jobs everywhere. Oh, but not that pay what you make at frito lay doing 84 hour weeks? Well then I don't know what to say. I do not believe a factory should be allowed to exploit human labor on this level. Hire more workers, which should be cheaper than paying 44 hours extra in overtime wages. If you cannot make a product without slave labor, then you shouldn't be in business. The workers are not scheduled 84 hours - they are told at the end of the shift that they will be coming in early the next day and staying late or they lose their jobs. They get out of a shift at 7 p.m. and then told they need to be a their job at 3 a.m. These workers weer not sitting home collecting unemployment, btw. Then that is when you start looking for another job. With all those hours they should be able to save up enough to even move to a better place or take some time off to find another job. Why should they have to? Why shouldn't the company hire enough workers so they don't have to depend on 84 hour work weeks? Why should a business have more rights than the humans that work for them? The business can't vote, so they actually have less rights than the humans that work for them. |

Work for an airline in the summer storm season, or winter, and see how many mandatory hours they dump on you. I have been stranded waiting for new flight crews and forced into overnight stays because airlines have strict limits on the number of hours an employee can work during a particular time period. When flight crews just sit at the gate with the door open they aren’t getting paid. Only there per diem which is a couple bucks an hour. That includes arriving at work and getting the plane ready. If they don’t shut those door and take off then no money for them. I get that. I have plenty of friends who are flight attendants and pilots. However, they have down time. Even if the aren't getting paid much to sit and wait, at least they are not working. The Frito-Lay factory workers get no days off. Some have worked 5 months without a single day off. Frito-Lay factory workers get no days off in between their 84 hour work weeks and they make about $55K a year including 45 hours a week of overtime. With overtime pay factored in, their average wage is $12.60 per hour, 84 hours a week. That's before taxes. Doesn't add up. $7.25/hr x 40 hrs = $290 x 52 weeks = $15080/yr $7.25/hr X 1.5 x 45 hrs = $489.38 x 52 weeks = $25447.50/yr ------ = $40,527.50/yr BUT PepsiCo does NOT pay factory employees minimum wage. According to payscale.com, the average Frito-Lay employee earns $18.77/hr base pay. SO: $18.77/hr x 40 hrs = $750.80 x 52 weeks = $39041.60/yr $18.77/hr x 1.5 hrs x 45 hrs = $1266.98 x 52 weeks = $65882.70 ------ = $104924.30/yr Not bad for picking and packing chips, I'd say. Sum ting wong with the story here. One person in the video has worked there for 35 years and makes $20 an hour base pay and hasn't had a raise in a decade. New hires are at $10 an hour. 40 hours x $10 = $400. 44 hours x $15 (overtime) = $660. That is $1060 per week. If they worked 84 hours a week the entire year minus 2 weeks of vacation (which is based at $400 per week), that is $53,000 base and an additional $800 in vacation pay. 50 weeks of 84 hour shifts is 4200 hours, which comes out to $12.80 per hour. Again. A factory that cannot operate without a 70-84 hour work week for line workers should not be in business. |

According to payscale the minimum they pay for any position is $12/hr and packaging/machine operators (factory floor) starts at $16/hr. Even supposing the minimum of $13/hr: $13/hr x 40 = $520 x 52 = $27040 $13/hr x 1.5 x 45 = $877.50 x 52 = $45630 ----- = $72,670/yr. It seems like you're claiming they SHOULD HAVE BEEN paid full time for the extra 45 hours a week, but no business in the US has ever been required by law to pay double time, and everybody knows that. I also find claims of mandatory overtime to be dubious. If you can't find employees to work full time at $10/hr for 40 hrs/wk what good will it do them to fire existing employees working overtime hours? Surely the whole factory floor would be in revolt if everyone was forced to work 85 hours a week and the company refused to hire new employees? |

Nobody is being 'exploited'. They are in a job they can freely leave at any point in time. Frito Lay is being generous IMO. Many companies don't even offer OT hours. Some people actually WANT to work those hours, make money and maybe invest and retire early. Why should lazy people who tire after 8 hours of lifting a bag of potato chips ruin the cash bonanza available to the hard workers who want to earn money? The solution is simple. The workers who don't want to work for Frito Lay should quit. If they blew all their money on smart phones, HDTVs and drugs and can't afford to quit maybe you should help them out since you care so much? Maybe donate money to organizations that help lazy people and quit jobs that offer lots of OT for cushy 28 hour/week part time jobs with no benefits? That would probably be more effective than bitching about things that don't affect you. |

And then these idiots come along tell others that you are lazy cannot work straight 100 hours. I am Senior Citizen and I went through a lot of experiences. Every year the management used to tighten the working rules and implement it in January. Since I was part of the management, I was tight lip. I understood every string that they used to pull. When I retired from my regular job, I ended up working for steel company for couple of years. Every year at least 3 people died on the job. The Company used to be quick to control the situation by calling us to the meeting and used to tell us their version of the story. Inside we would hear the reality. Safety talks is BS. It is a stunt that they would go through for regulatory authorities. Unions are useless. The people that get elected are kiss Ass. Never saw genuine person to work for the worker. You are slave, but you are not called slave. An average worker doesn't know how to deal with crooks. This is where they loose the battle. When they hire you part time, it means they don't have to pay you the benefits. In the past Corporations couldn't keep more than 5% part time. Today they fire the regular worker and replace them with part timer. Revolution has to come. |

How can one be a good parent if they have no time for their children or spouse? What is the point of working like a dog if you don't even have a moment to enjoy your existence on this planet? The Frito-Lay factory workers were not given a single day off for months. I know what it is like to put in 100 hour work weeks, half of which was intense physical labor. It was my own business and had to be done. I never allowed my employees to work more than 45 hours a week and they all got 4 weeks paid vacation a year, holiday pay and double time if they worked holidays. I also paid them living wages, not minimum wage. If I couldn't create a profitable business that didn't rely on exploiting my workers, I shouldn't be in business. Same with Frito-Lay. |
