Shit that’s nothing. Kellogg’s in Cincinnati will force you to work 16 hours a day 7 days a week for 20+ straight days. And you don’t even know you have to pull the second 8 until 15 minutes left in your first 8. It’s a shit place with 0 morale.

Umm.

Quit.

You can fire an employer just as fast as they can fire you.

There's jobs everywhere.

Oh, but not that pay what you make at frito lay doing 84 hour weeks? Well then I don't know what to say.
 Quoting: shovelbum

I do not believe a factory should be allowed to exploit human labor on this level. Hire more workers, which should be cheaper than paying 44 hours extra in overtime wages. If you cannot make a product without slave labor, then you shouldn't be in business.

The workers are not scheduled 84 hours - they are told at the end of the shift that they will be coming in early the next day and staying late or they lose their jobs. They get out of a shift at 7 p.m. and then told they need to be a their job at 3 a.m.

These workers weer not sitting home collecting unemployment, btw.
 Quoting: Happy in Nature

Then that is when you start looking for another job. With all those hours they should be able to save up enough to even move to a better place or take some time off to find another job.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79543875

Why should they have to? Why shouldn't the company hire enough workers so they don't have to depend on 84 hour work weeks? Why should a business have more rights than the humans that work for them?
 Quoting: Happy in Nature

The business can't vote, so they actually have less rights than the humans that work for them.

Lol… 84 hours….
Work for an airline in the summer storm season, or winter, and see how many mandatory hours they dump on you.
 Quoting: Flying Elvii

I have been stranded waiting for new flight crews and forced into overnight stays because airlines have strict limits on the number of hours an employee can work during a particular time period.
 Quoting: Happy in Nature

When flight crews just sit at the gate with the door open they aren’t getting paid. Only there per diem which is a couple bucks an hour. That includes arriving at work and getting the plane ready. If they don’t shut those door and take off then no money for them.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79543875

I get that. I have plenty of friends who are flight attendants and pilots. However, they have down time. Even if the aren't getting paid much to sit and wait, at least they are not working.

The Frito-Lay factory workers get no days off. Some have worked 5 months without a single day off. Many are working 17 hour shifts every single day.

I remember the slope workers in Alaska did 84 hours a week for 2 weeks in a row. They did get 2 weeks off and made over 100K a year.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79565603

The. Frito-Lay factory workers get no days off in between their 84 hour work weeks and they make about $55K a year including 45 hours a week of overtime. With overtime pay factored in, their average wage is $12.60 per hour, 84 hours a week. That's before taxes.
 Quoting: Happy in Nature

Doesn't add up.

$7.25/hr x 40 hrs = $290 x 52 weeks = $15080/yr
$7.25/hr X 1.5 x 45 hrs = $489.38 x 52 weeks = $25447.50/yr
------
= $40,527.50/yr BUT PepsiCo does NOT pay factory employees minimum wage.

According to payscale.com, the average Frito-Lay employee earns $18.77/hr base pay. SO:

$18.77/hr x 40 hrs = $750.80 x 52 weeks = $39041.60/yr
$18.77/hr x 1.5 hrs x 45 hrs = $1266.98 x 52 weeks = $65882.70
------
= $104924.30/yr

Not bad for picking and packing chips, I'd say. Sum ting wong with the story here.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80593370

One person in the video has worked there for 35 years and makes $20 an hour base pay and hasn't had a raise in a decade.

New hires are at $10 an hour. 40 hours x $10 = $400. 44 hours x $15 (overtime) = $660. That is $1060 per week. If they worked 84 hours a week the entire year minus 2 weeks of vacation (which is based at $400 per week), that is $53,000 base and an additional $800 in vacation pay. 50 weeks of 84 hour shifts is 4200 hours, which comes out to $12.80 per hour.

Again. A factory that cannot operate without a 70-84 hour work week for line workers should not be in business.

 Quoting: Happy in Nature

Find me a current job listing for Frito-Lay for $10/hr. According to payscale the minimum they pay for any position is $12/hr and packaging/machine operators (factory floor) starts at $16/hr.

Even supposing the minimum of $13/hr:

$13/hr x 40 = $520 x 52 = $27040
$13/hr x 1.5 x 45 = $877.50 x 52 = $45630
-----
= $72,670/yr.

Even using your example of $12.60/hr:

$12.60/hr x 40 = $540 x 52 = $26208
$12.60/hr x 1.5 x 45 = $850.5 x 52 = $44226
-----
= $70,434/yr

Let's run with $10/hr:
$10/hr x 40 = $400 x 52 = $20800
$10/hr x 1.5 x 45 = $675 x 52 = $35100
-----
= $55,900/yr

Doesn't add up to the claims made.

It seems like you're claiming they SHOULD HAVE BEEN paid full time for the extra 45 hours a week, but no business in the US has ever been required by law to pay double time, and everybody knows that.

I also find claims of mandatory overtime to be dubious. If you can't find employees to work full time at $10/hr for 40 hrs/wk what good will it do them to fire existing employees working overtime hours? Surely the whole factory floor would be in revolt if everyone was forced to work 85 hours a week and the company refused to hire new employees?

Modern slavery is the severe exploitation of other people for personal or commercial gain. 84 hour work weeks are inhumane. If you have your own business, you are doing it for your own benefit. If you demand an employee work 12 to 18 hour days and do not give them days off for months, that is exploitation and the definition of modern slavery.

The physical effects from these hours include heart disease, increased cortisol production, nerve damage and depression. the quality of life suffers.

I don't mean to diminish slavery becasue it exists today, in cobalt mines, cacao farms and human trafficking networks. If you want to play with semantics, fine, but Frito=Lay is grossly exploiting their workers because they put profits over the workers who make their products.

LOL 'you care', huh? You don't have any clue who those people are or what they do. Nobody is being 'exploited'. They are in a job they can freely leave at any point in time.

Frito Lay is being generous IMO. Many companies don't even offer OT hours. Some people actually WANT to work those hours, make money and maybe invest and retire early.

Why should lazy people who tire after 8 hours of lifting a bag of potato chips ruin the cash bonanza available to the hard workers who want to earn money?

The solution is simple. The workers who don't want to work for Frito Lay should quit. If they blew all their money on smart phones, HDTVs and drugs and can't afford to quit maybe you should help them out since you care so much?

Maybe donate money to organizations that help lazy people and quit jobs that offer lots of OT for cushy 28 hour/week part time jobs with no benefits? That would probably be more effective than bitching about things that don't affect you.

If you watch the video, you will understand why this is modern day slavery.
 Quoting: Happy in Nature

What is the definition of Slave. Unless you read the letters of Slave Americans, you will not understand what slavery is. And then these idiots come along tell others that you are lazy cannot work straight 100 hours.
I am Senior Citizen and I went through a lot of experiences.
Every year the management used to tighten the working rules and implement it in January. Since I was part of the management, I was tight lip. I understood every string that they used to pull.
When I retired from my regular job, I ended up working for steel company for couple of years. Every year at least 3 people died on the job. The Company used to be quick to control the situation by calling us to the meeting and used to tell us their version of the story. Inside we would hear the reality.
Safety talks is BS. It is a stunt that they would go through for regulatory authorities. Unions are useless. The people that get elected are kiss Ass. Never saw genuine person to work for the worker.

You are slave, but you are not called slave. An average worker doesn't know how to deal with crooks. This is where they loose the battle. When they hire you part time, it means they don't have to pay you the benefits. In the past Corporations couldn't keep more than 5% part time. Today they fire the regular worker and replace them with part timer. Revolution has to come.

In fact, this is exactly how I made a lot of my own money, but I don't work for Pepsi. I'm not paid by Pepsi, and I'm not a shill.... I just saw the numbers and they don't add up.

This isn't about stock - this is about human rights.

If you don't think my math is valid, point out the errors. New line workers start at $10 per hour and a 35-year line worker stated he is only making $20.50 per hour base and has not had a raise in a decade, despite corporate profits.

LOL muh 'human rights'!

They have a Human Right to quit the damn job if they don't like it. End of story.

Re: Frito Lays "Suicide Shifts" Spark Worker Strikes
How hard can it be to make a fucking potato chip?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79470989

It isn't. All of the hard work is done by machines. Unless their systems have been updated since I was last in the factory, the only jobs humans did were cleaning, picking burned chips off the conveyor the computer missed, and picking bags and boxing them. Literally everything else was done by machine/computer. I think there were only something like 40 employees total on shift at any given time in the entire factory. This was in the 90s.

1) It doesn't affect YOU why do you care?

2) If they don't want to work it they can quit.

I care about people and I don't want to see others exploited for corporate for profits, regardless of the country.

Quitting isn't an option for many or they would have left a long time ago. No one stays at a job like that because they enjoy working for peanuts while stockholders get rich.

I already posted the math. Look back in the thread. The claimed numbers don't add up in ANY scenario.

I worked that many hours for years. Bunch of fucking pussies!

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79460732

So you are justifying Frito-Lays exploitation because you worked that many hours, too?

How can one be a good parent if they have no time for their children or spouse? What is the point of working like a dog if you don't even have a moment to enjoy your existence on this planet?

The Frito-Lay factory workers were not given a single day off for months.

I know what it is like to put in 100 hour work weeks, half of which was intense physical labor. It was my own business and had to be done. I never allowed my employees to work more than 45 hours a week and they all got 4 weeks paid vacation a year, holiday pay and double time if they worked holidays. I also paid them living wages, not minimum wage. If I couldn't create a profitable business that didn't rely on exploiting my workers, I shouldn't be in business. Same with Frito-Lay.
