User ID: 79796232 Canada 10/13/2021 03:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yeah, runnung into a lot of outrage on this one right now - giant pain in my ass. Even my i5-7200U is considered too "old," even though it was being used in systems up to the beginning of this year. The worst part? the "PC Health Check" will tell you that you pass EVERY parameter, even minimum CPU requirements get the checkmark - but disqualify you because the CPU isn't on the "list." And to exacerbate the issue, they THEMSELVES allow for you to override that requirement if you use installation media, and they ALSO explain exactly how to override SecureBoot and TPM requirements, on the MS official doc pages. But then they explain that doing so will remove all support for the system, and even void OEM / Manufacturer's support / warranty. Gee - trying to drive hardware sales, anyone? Oh, wait - there ARE some older (pre-gen 8) processors allowed - as long as they're specific to Surface hardware. Scam, as usual. ad ignorantiam - The assumption of a conclusion or fact based primarily on lack of evidence to the contrary. Well, of course! They don't care - they have enough for MS proprietary hardware - that's nothing but an advantage for them. If Asus et al ar3e having a hard time sourcing procs, all the better for MS sales. Yet at the same time, they understand that the issue exists - so they SPECIFICALLY build in workarounds to ensure that the new OS propagates rapidly despite the "unsupported hardware" issue - while absolving themselves of any responsibility for it and legally indemnifying themselves even though they actually provided you with the workaround. Sounds like big pharma, doesn't it? Interesting that Gates had a huge part in influencing both industries... :| ad ignorantiam - The assumption of a conclusion or fact based primarily on lack of evidence to the contrary. Yeah, utilizing 3x the resources, which shouldn't be required in the first place, and that still won't work properly in some cases, especially with some RD platforms. Simple, but shouldn't be necessary - and not really the point of the convo, though you're more or less correct. ad ignorantiam - The assumption of a conclusion or fact based primarily on lack of evidence to the contrary. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79275646 You need to turn on BOTH TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot in your BIOs. Usually in the security section of it. Processors more than 5 years old might not support it. Does not matter - aren't you paying attention? Microsoft has created an arbitrary LIST of processors which are considered "supported," and anything not on that list fails the test, therefore cannot be officially upgraded. Yes, you can circumvent that and it will work just fine (and it appears that updates are still being processed on these systems) but you then void any support for the system from both MS and the hardware manufacturer. Also, hint, unless it's a custom system, units haven't shipped with TPM and SB disabled since W8. ad ignorantiam - The assumption of a conclusion or fact based primarily on lack of evidence to the contrary. User ID: 79796232 Canada 10/13/2021 03:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think this is the problem for the more recent, yet excluded, processors Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80070202 Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0 Nope - the two are mutually exclusive. Again, this particular system (and millions more) are barely three years old, and meet EVERY SINGLE REQUIREMENT. The CPU in fact FAR exceeds the CPU minimum requirement. The issue is that the PROCESSOR MODEL has been excluded for age-based reasons, no more. You cna pass EVERY check but it will fail the system and not allow a traditional upgrade because the proc isn't on an "approved" list, arbitrarily - that's all. ad ignorantiam - The assumption of a conclusion or fact based primarily on lack of evidence to the contrary.
