This makes me really sad. I am heartbroken for the families of these girls who have no answers.

It also makes me think of how young and naive I was… as I travelled all over Mexico, Central and South America when I was younger and had several scary experiences. There were girls traveling who assumed that the world is all good and were foolishly too trusting. I thought since I always watched my back, was aware of my surroundings, and had some type of weapon that I was probably ok. That was so dumb though… that could have easily gone bad. Unfortunately often youth and foolhardiness go hand in hand.

What I found is that taxi drivers are renown for being crooked especially in capital cities.. I’d always have a map and follow where we were and where we were going from the back seat, behind the driver. I’d check locks and had a leatherman in my front pocket that I could use to break the window if I was locked in.

In 15 years of traveling I had several near robberies…( and one did get me). I also heard many stories first-hand from other travelers.

One time in Lima a taxi driver started going opposite from where I knew we should be going. Luckily I had been there once before and also was following on my map… I knew we were off. So I questioned him. He said it was a short cut. My gut told me no. So, I insisted he turn around immediately or I was getting out at the next stop light. Then he was on the phone with a friend talking about hotel lodging. Over and over he told me how his friend had a hotel that was cheaper and better than mine and was super aggressive about taking me there. (I have had this type of thing happen before which can legit but… my Spidey Senses told me this guy was no-good-o). Again, I told him to keep on the main road and just take me to my hotel. When we got there he ordered me to jump out and he’d find a place to park and bring my luggage. Of course I declined. After we’d parked and I was on the sidewalk he all of a sudden looked down at my huge backpack and then sideways at his car which was running. I instantly sensed he was considering making a run for it with my bag. I laughed out loud and looked him very seriously in the eye. Told him I knew he wanted my bag. I had a black belt in karate and wanted some fun… so go ahead and try to take it. We stared each other down and I gave him the hand motion to come and get it. He turned around and left.
Once I was sure he was gone… I fell to my knees and couldn’t stop trembling. I don’t have a black belt belt. I never would have done this if we hadn’t been on a Main Street with plenty of traffic and if I didn’t have a decent read on people. I knew he was a coward.

Another time on a public bus a sweet older man sat down next to us. That crammed 3 of us into one seat. There were plenty of completely empty seats all over the bus so this was not normal and my alarm bells went off. I saw he had a sweater draped over his arm which confirmed it was bad. He had a knife. I’d heard about this and had been warned by other travelers to watch out for people on buses with anything over their arm. Apparently they would sit close and then poke you on the side and then take your purse or money. So I jumped up immediately to change seats. Instead he got up and moved 3 seats back. Then each stop he’d move up one seat until he was right behind us. Instinctivlely I could feel we were in danger. So I decided to draw attention to us. In the loudest, most obnoxious way I could (in Spanish) I turned around and started babbling to him about how’d I’d eaten bad shrimp and had diarreah in detail (not true). I was so embarrassed…but it got all eyes on me. He got off at the next stop. He was well dressed and looked like the sweetest old man. You can’t judge a book by its cover.

While traveling (as a girl especially) you have to always be watching your back. I hope one day we can live in a world where this will not be the case.
Until then… I have started working towards that black belt.

In safe locations in the United States, if you are an attractive female, men can’t control themselves. The gestures, comments, hoots & hollering is ridiculous... Without dressing provactively at all. We took a few trips to Europe as teens with the family & foreign men were even worse. Any woman who does not realize the basic dangers of a location & ability to call for help isn’t thinking at all. Just driving home after meeting a friend after college graduation in a safe city in California, I was at a stop light with music on & window half down in a field area. I looked in my side mirror to see just the mid section of 2 men close to my car coming at my door. They stopped behind me & in the lane next to me in my blind spot. No other cars were around at midnight. I immediately floored it through the red light. They were probably 2 feet from grabbing me through the window & pulling me out of the car. After I went speeding through the red light, they ran back to their car & did a “U” turn speeding the opposite direction. Too many men are sex obsessed rapists!

You would never catch me walking in some creepy forest or isolated trail were a pervert murderer could hide anywhere.

The one thing that says something different happened was the rolled-up shin in where ever it was found. How could anyone explain shin unless it was tanned not rotting? Also, someone could have found them both and they could have been in bad condition and one survived longer than the other. The person could have been the one calling for help and didn't know what to do with them, many reasons don't want to be thought a criminal because this happens many times. So future time find their remains. It is just another possibility of what happened. There is also a chance they ate something that affected their thoughts, the hand picture seems to be to show they were alive at that time, it could have been for just in case they didn't make it.

There is for sure a reason, and when your brain is not working well because something happened to cause it, could explain their problems and the other just someone who found them and didn't want to get in trouble, except they could have tried to get help for the girls. It is an opinion to the story, not necessarily what happened yet it is a bit better than what was told in the video. They are assuming someone or something got them, not always or ever the most common occurrence unless it the disappearing when you are with a lot of other people and they didn't have problems. I didn't see enough food either to feed both girls so it could lead them to eat something they shouldn't have. As for the ball-looking things in the pictures, it happens more than people think, it is how the light messes up I believe, or things on the lens at the time very possible being at night.

People should always be more prepared to go somewhere they have never been anything can happen, Murphy's Law, any bad happen will happen in any given time.

South America is not the rubbish you are implying.

It was obviously done by bad humans. Remains were manipulated and a few bones staged to be found for an explanation of their death so media hype would go away. Backpack also placed to be found. At least, one was probably kept alive for weeks at least before being murdered. Government and police hid evidence. Either out of fear of retaliation of a criminal org. or protecting countries reputation and not wanting to scare off tourists. That's just my opinion. An accident makes no sense with state of bodies and the backpack. You would also think someone would come along and hear them screaming for help if either were alive there for days in that area.

People get chopped up all the time in South America, people think the Middle East or Africa is dangerous, they got nothing on South America.

Moral of the story is don’t be a dumb bitch thinking you can take your liberal attitude to anywhere you please, the world is a dangerous shithole just waiting to eat you up and shit out the pieces.

Some of those photos are just downright weird and give me the creeps:

I'm surprised the reward money didn't produce any leads.

Maybe it was some kind of accident where one girl was injured and died, that would explain the backpack with both of their stuff (the surviving girl set off to try to find help or find her way back, they could have been lost).

Someone did a great analysis on YouTube, here's basically what happened:

The girls made it back from their hike safely and went to a swimming hole with some younger guys they met earlier.

The guys are involved in sex/organ trafficking. After their swim, they kidnap the girls and rape them over the course of a few days. They hid them in a cave, where the bizarre photos of the hair were taken. The girls repeatedly try to dial 911, but can't get a signal.

The young men eventually kill the 2 girls and dismember them.

2 of the young men involved are found dead within months... silenced.

Panama covered up the whole affair and officials likely deleted the photo on the camera, because it would end tourism there.

Tragic. 2 attractive girls should never travel alone.

I believe that there were certain locals who reported hearing women screaming in the night. Also I seem to remember reading a report of a seasoned German tourist hiker who was nearby the same trail the day the girls were hiking and heard screams and went to investigate in the direction of the screams and came upon two local men blocking him from going further in the direction of the screams. The German ran back to the authorities for help but when they reached the spot where they two men were they were long gone in another direction.
