Kraft Cheese Unfrigerated On Store Shelf

I've had occasion to run across refrigerated items littered about the store. Sometimes I walk them all the way to where they belong. But then again, who knows how long they've been sitting out?

Maybe I should re-think that next time.

I wouldn't buy them, but then again, margarine and Velveeta aren't in the refrigeration section anymore, either. Haven't been for years unless it's the only place they have. I switched to butter when I starting seeing that.

It should be fine. American cheese is awesome for certain comfort foods. If you don't eat it, that's wonderful.

It depends on if it is real cheese or a cheese food / cheese product

Most people don't realize there is a BIG difference between them.

Real cheese would grow moldy eventually, even in a package. My father in law took off for the winter and left "pasturized process cheese food" like this out on the counter for months and it looked exactly the same, while everything else that should have been refrigerated rotted.

The cheese might be fresh long after were dead.

cheese, real cheese, is fine for extended periods at room temp. if it has lost 85% or more of it's moisture through maturation (parmesan, grana padano, and pecorino romano are prime examples) then it is 'room temperature stable' and doesn't require refrigeration.

the only cheeses that I would worry about being at room temp for a long time are those that are normally in the dairy case with the milk/cream or those that are very high in moisture (cream cheese, cottage cheese, ricotta, labne, fresh mozzarella, et al).

cheeses aged in brine are also fine at ambient temps as long as the cheese stays moist/submerged (feta).

Eventually the manager will find out about this and have the cheese moved to the refrigerator section. Sadly folks will buy it, eat and have bad consequences.
