Powdered milk was often given to newborns before 3 months of age.

After 6 months, most babies ate beans and rice or whatever the family ate. Adult foods were broken into small bits and fed from the mother's hand. Mothers normally chose suitable food from among what the family was eating.

Some mothers naturally don't produce enough milk especially if she has twins.

Others have medical complications from giving birth and need an alternative solution.

Also there are babies born with severe allergies who do better on another solution.

I am sure that did wonders for their development.


Many factors determine the health of a baby including the genetic lottery.

As long as sufficient food is provided who's to say supplementing breast milk with "real" food won't work?

Orphans don't have a choice. Neither do babies in poor countries where mom can't produce enough milk.
