If you did manage to do my idea, your camera will show a lot of good shots by shooting a bigger projectile, especially with the exploding case and seeing the arrows fragmenting. Also into targets you have used, shaving foam, light bulbs, etc.
 Quoting: BeerBelly

Without a sealed chamber around the cartridge, the explosion won't be that powerful...

But the target must be solid enough the force the tip into the primer...

It's 225 lb draw, not 220 oops, and 350 fps...Pretty sure it will pop, but I expect the carbon fiber bolt to be undamaged.

If this doesn't perform well enough, I will try that. The first thing I taught MacGyver, is to use what materials are available. grinning

I need to run to the hardware store soon...

First, I retrieved the crossbow target, heavy foam, from the guest house, and then was offered free trees that are being downed a 100 yrds away...Oak!

I must keep my truck emptied for them now that I'm committed...One load (1.5 ricks) done...It will take them a few hours to refill...

Buying them lunch.

Also found another bowling ball to blow up lol This time with better lighting and clarity...

I will set up the crossbow experiment soon...Promise!

Lucky bugger! We're burning seasoned hardwood and got the gas central heating on. Bought logs and coal in summer as I knew we would use them this year with the price of gas. Nice to have them burning again. Haven't used logs and coal for six years.
I'm working on a new idea...
Hang a lit bulb in front of a hard board so it is touching the board and shoot it with your crossbow setup.

Yeah, I've had the furnace on for a few days now, it snowed yesterday with an 1" accumulation...

These fellas are going to heat my home all winter!

3 big Oaks are being cut!

I bought them lunch, and they are giving me probably $2,000 worth of wood...

So I have pics uploading...A successful failure.

Oh, and I do have another big bulb to shoot with a bolt...against a board, ok but I want a open shot too...

Deleted the old bowling ball pics, some amateur took those wink

I'll replace them under the same code and link it back to a future current post...If that makes sense??

This is a successful failure, in that I like the stills I was able to extract from the video, however as you can see, the 9mm got its head shoved into its ass, and the primer even dented without setting off the primer cap. I knew this was a high probability...

I will redesign the setup, and try again...

225 lb draw crossbow @ 350 fps

I love how the bolts bend and wobble, but strike the target!

Now imagine the bolt hitting flesh, with razor broadheads, and wobbling as you will see!! No chance of survival.

It takes all of 3-5 seconds to reload...If you have the strength and endurance to keep it up LOL

Silent, but deadly...

The first five frames are in sequence, but I have to skip frames, or I would be posting a hundred pics...240 frames per second!

It takes 5 frames for the water to react to the impact!

Yes, you shoot a bullet into a pouch to make the arrow go faster than a speeding bullet (well, nearly as fast)

My only concern for the bullet towing an arrow, is making the "pouch" strong enough and light enough, to withstand the pressure of the bullet (2000++ fps).

Kevlar, carbon fiber cloth, is stronger than steel of the same thickness...

It will need mass to move the weight, a .22 wouldn't do it lol

A 12 ga 3" magnum with 2-65 caliber lead balls would work...

Kevlar pouch will need to be 10mm thick to keep from puncturing.

Kevlar cloth:

[link to www.amazon.com (secure)]

shears:

[link to www.amazon.com (secure)]

epoxy:

[link to www.amazon.com (secure)]

Since the bolts are also carbon fiber, I can epoxy the tether to it...

Plausible!

Only drawback is the distance it will be able to travel in my shooting range, but the slow-mo might be very cool...

Posted to refer back when caught up with current projects...

No, thank you.

I really appreciate that!

I have spent much more for less, lol

BTW God has a great sense of humor...

I'm not out of shape, but yesterday I not only hauled four loads of FREE wood, but also shot the crossbow several times...I know from experience alone it takes up to three days to fully realize muscle soreness...

Today, Day one: ouch

Can't wait for tomorrow!

Luckily, the tree guys cut up the pieces in fireplace size logs, so I can burn the smaller pieces until I recover...I split wood by hand...Sledgehammer and wedges

Anyhow, I have another design ready for testing on the "Rambo exploding arrow" which is the bullet tipped crossbow bolt.

I inverted the field tip and super glued it to the shaft insert, then glued it to the cap of another 9mm...Then secured it with electrical tape for a bit more strength...

It takes 4 lbs of pressure to discharge the round, provided it hits "squarely" on target...

This time I will shoot it at a metal plate, to see if I can get it to discharge the round, before getting fancy with trying to destroy anything with it.

KISS principal: Keep it simple stupid

Version 2 is primarily why I haven't ordered to Kevlar supplies just yet...

The 90* wooden launcher, will be angle iron. I determined that from day one...I'm a metal worker, so I have it in stock.

A simple hinge with metal rod as the fulcrum will replace the flexible screw.

Angle iron + two holes, metal rod, Piece of steel welded to fulcrum rod = hinge

The leverage of the hinge solves the issue with the mass needed to launch the arrow!

Now I CAN use a .22 to give it enough energy to fire the arrow!

Well done!

I see a greater chance of success over the previous design...

Rube Goldberg would be proud of us!

looks good.
We will set a world record for fastest arrow/bolt, then have to keep beating it.
Do you think Guiness World Records might be interested? They might want it shot by conventional means but, no matter how it is shot, it should still be fast.
Try an exploding arrow on it if it works.
Have to think of other things to launch.

Applied to your design (I will show my original design to save me redrawing it.) slight mod. using standard arrow/bolt, might need a bit of leather/similar to absorb the shock of metal on metal on arrow material where the green nipple is. Maybe another piece on the side that bullet hits, that would need constant replacement.

Taking it a step further, it should generate even more speed using my original arrow design.

I remade the bowling ball stills, because the first set sucked...

You can clearly see "3" 7.62 x 54 bullets, in three of the frames.

I shot just one of course, but a bullet traveling at 3,600 feet per second is being filmed at 240 Frames per second, so the math tells us we can expect multiple frames of the speeding bullet!

Air pressure. Same principal as the cone of condensation, that forms at the nose of a rocket or fighter jet, as it approaches the sound barrier...

What is the sound barrier?

The sonic boom heard as the air is divided and claps or slaps back together, after being cut by a moving object...

Re: Brief's indoor firing range with slow motion stills. Action start pg 5 ***CHECK OUT page 23 ! Lightbulbs!! Bowling ball explodes, pg. 30!!
I am upgrading my slow motion photography skills from Novice to Amateur. If anyone disagrees, speak now or forever hold your peace!

Your Littlepixie disagrees, I think you are a professional at what you do with your experiments. I think the "Forged in Fire" producers would also be impressed.

Now to make you giggle, maybe even laugh...assuming you get my wee joke. Don't worry I don't want to by it.

Seems I'm better at recognizing patterns than a neurotypical.
