Maybe I can enjoy the serene glow of the mushroom cloud. The safest places would be in countries who do not have nuclear power capabilities. If the USA were to have a nuclear exchange with Russia then No state will be safe. The eastern and western coasts would be obliterated. If Nuclear war were to actually take place, it wont be a few "tactical" strikes. Those politicians who tout this as a possible scenario are idiots. The consequences would be too deadly. It would be as complete as possible to decrease the amount of nuclear exchange on the first striking party. The second we are aware of inbound missiles, retaliatory strikes will be sent out. If it were to take place there will be many, many inbound missiles. The first ones likely sent from subs as a first strike to take out communications, deploying aircraft, known missile silos and military mobilization centers. Many detonated at high altitude to produce massive waves of EMP. While the rest quickly follow, rapidly deployed by air. Military bases and communications centers will be wiped out first, in an attempt to stop any further mobilization or military actions. Major cities will be targeted because most, if not all, house military installations and bunkers. The chaos, mayhem, fear and lack of adequate medical supplies after electrical grid failure and knowledge of nuclear war spreads, along with the fallout that will begin shortly after detonation, will finish off most survivors of those cities who do not escape quickly enough. Any survivors close to those cities who are not underground with adequate supplies to hold out for longer than 4-6 weeks will suffer from some sort of radiation sickness either acute or long-term. Any Politicians and their families who weren't already alerted and moved, will be transported to the closest DUMBS, if those DUMBS aren't already destroyed. Known bunkers might be targeted, but likely wont. Those people would have been the first to know of the strike and will have already been hidden away, so why waste a nuclear warhead that would probably be survived. They will probably survive the initial destruction, then try to wait out the fallout's worst half life, and hopefully survive, before traveling to larger and more well stocked bunkers. These people will have armed guards, working vehicles and weapons. The president, Vice-President, Speaker of the House and the President Pro Tempore will all be taken to different locations in an attempt to maintain governmental succession in the event that one or more die. This wont matter to many, since we will have no knowledge of what is going on for many months or years, if at all. Unfortunately the largest threat to Americans (those who survive the initial detonations) will be the massive amounts of fallout being spread across the land by prevailing winds. Plants, animals and water sources will be contaminated for many years. Consuming irradiated water and wildlife will kill many more, just slower. These people will know they are dying. Who knows what they will spend their last months and years doing. But by then, the world survivors would be too concerned with surviving the coming Nuclear winter and roving bands of murderous scavengers that follow, to care too much about the water they drink and the food they eat. Death will be everywhere. Apathy and the loss of the will to live, will result in atrocities and much death. But all of that has its own story. A story that doesn't matter unless it actually happens. So until then live your life without fear. Find God. What will be, will be. Us inconsequential peons have no control over the matter anyways. Should it happen and should you survive, well, then that story will begin. BittersweetArtemis |

Also LNG storage and shipping... Lots of other refineries besides gas / oil... The "port" is used to ship out military vehicles and Port of Beaumont (20 miles away) is where they also ship out military vehicles...that where they keep the 2 super large military transport ships are based... Also Big Hill, where the strategic reserves are held. That’s assuming there is any strategic oil left when they start popping off. Yes, forgot about it... Also about 20 miles from me... |

I also work right across the street from a major defense contractor with a large runway, so I am pretty sure if it happens while I am at work I will be inside a fireball. |

As you can see, a target-rich environment. If they hit most or all of the above with 100kt-150kt SLBMs, I stand a decent chance of surviving, especially if they are airburst. Even a few big boys dropped on the city could likely be withstood. Using lots of much bigger stuff, like Russian 800kt Topol SS25s, and me and mine are crispy critters. |

Quoting: Florid Aman 80569028 Oh yeah, you're screwed. Those that will be vaporized in a 1st strike will have it a lot easier than those left behind in a nuclear wasteland imho I’ve wondered about the subject of living after a full nuclear war. I believe 1800 nukes have been detonated in the atmosphere over decades. I think 7000 nukes and a year later the world would almost be back to livability with caution for radioactive food, water, and hot spots. Mostly, it should be fine. Resources though and no supply chain is more the issue. I might be wrong but my gut tells me that life on Earth is waaaaaay more resilient than anyone knows. DNA comes from indestructible nano structures called microzyma. Our blood and Earth is teeming with them. They are in the limestone. |
