14ga .999 silver wire 1.5" apart is the method I saw. Lower amps produce the smallest silver particles so an hour might be enough for 8oz product. Old printer power adapters are 30VDC
Higher silver levels are still good for external use, like washing fruit.

The thread’s purpose was, and remains, an effort to provide accurate, honest, and non-commercial information to those interested in making the most effective form of colloidal Silver.
The biggest problem with colloidal Silver is its name. If we call something colloidal, it merely means that it is held in suspension. For example, milk is colloidal butterfat. As it is homogenized, the fat particles will tend to stay in suspension because the particles have been agitated to the point where they are small enough to not combine and rise to the top.
Now, what does this have to do with making colloidal Silver? It’s not hard to understand why we want the smallest possible particles of Silver. Let’s face it. We don’t want any more metal of any kind in our body other than what we need to stay well or heal a wound or infection. For a given total weight of the metal, small particles will result in a much greater surface area than large particles. For Silver to affect the microbe, it has to come into contact with that microbe. For the sake of simplicity, let’s consider our particles as spheres. If our particle is 100 nm in diameter, it will weigh the same as about 10,000 1 nm particles. What would have a better chance of getting to the bacteria we want to kill? 10,000 or one?
“Colloidal silver” is sold with ratings of parts per million “PPM.” That is the ratio of the water’s weight versus the Silver contained and suspended in the water. This measurement is made by the method of atomic absorption spectrophotometer. A sample is burned, and the light emitted includes spectral lines for Silver, the amplitude of which gives an indication of the parts per million, by weight. There is nothing in this method to distinguish between ions, “charged” particles, and uncharged.
It is easy for an unscrupulous colloidal Silver manufacturer to make and advertise “colloidal silver” with strengths of 20, 30, 50, or 500 PPM. All they have to do is generate large particles and coat them with a substance lighter than water to stay in suspension. These solutions will have a color as the larger particles will block out portions of the ambient light, trying to shine through the water. The larger the particles, the more color, beginning with light yellow. There is real evidence to suggest that these solutions will do you harm, leading to a condition called argyria.
As you read through the thread, you will find numerous citations of serious, peer-reviewed studies illustrating silver ions’ superiority in killing bacteria to silver particles. The number of silver ions is measured in terms of electrical conductivity. When this thread started, the only instruments with the ability to measure this were quite expensive. The price of these has come down to a remarkable degree. A device capable of measuring ionic PPM within one or two ppm is now available on eBay for less than $10. If you’re going to make colloidal silver “ionic,” one of these should be the first thing you purchase. The second thing is to make sure that you get genuine 9999 pure silver wire with a certificate of analysis from a reputable source. Other than that, all you need is a voltage source and a resistor to limit the current. A multimeter with the 2 V scale and an additional 1K resistor will allow you to measure your current in microamps. That is all you need to make perfect, clear colloidal Silver. With a certain amount of experimentation, you will be able to make your colloidal Silver of a quality equal to commercial manufacturers’ offerings.

It would be nice if I could afford the costs of reaching a broad audience concerned about their health. Except for social media, eyeballs cost money, lots of money. This fact enables the pharmaceutical industry to suppress information allowing individuals to care for themselves. Whatever ails you, real or imagined, BigPharma will have something to fix it for a price.
Colloidal silver has some extraordinary capabilities and hundreds of legitimate uses. But without standardization, quality control, and extensive medical testing, the public will never know how best to use colloidal silver in a given situation. FDA may yet try to restrict public access to colloidal silver, claiming it is unsafe, even though they know how "safe and effective" it CAN BE when appropriately used. In the absence of the release of this authoritative testing data, the public is left just experimenting and groping for the answers. A big fight over the public's access to colloidal silver may be looming because this country's healthcare cost is out of control, and the public is looking for inexpensive solutions that work. In that sense, colloidal silver could be "just what the doctor ordered."

It's been a little over 5 months since I brewed up some 50+ppm silver at home. I have not had a single sinus infection since that time. I use a nasal mister a few times a day.

I've had chronic sinus problems for over 20+ years and this has stopped it in its tracks. It also caused the Trigerminal Neuralga to stay flared up constantly. I have reduced episodes by 80-90%.

You are very welcome, my friend. Your situation with your sinuses is precisely where I found myself some 30 years ago. Even the five PPM available at that time enabled me to be functional. You say you are using a mister. At five PPM, I needed to ensure I was completely flooding my sinus cavities. A mister would not have accomplished that. You may have illustrated the need for 50 PPM, which only the Ultra produces.

I understand the wire is $32 more and a Half gallon jar is $10. What's the extra $84 for?

That is a fair question, and in the spirit of the thread title, "the art of making colloidal silver," it deserves an answer. If you visit the link titled " the forum," you will find a progression of our efforts to the point where we could get to 10 to 15 PPM of perhaps 80% ionic reliably. Periodic polarity reversals helped, but anything over 20 PPM could not be relied upon to stay at that level over a reasonable storage time and had to be used immediately. The one exception to this was the sovereign silver AG 23 product sold only to medical doctors.
An additional problem that we could not resolve was that no two batches would turn out the same. The consensus was that differences in the distilled water caused this.
Then there was the firm belief of the chemical fraternity that water could not hold more than 25 PPM of ionic silver in the solution. Some still need help with this.
Here is a picture taken when I first broke through the 25 PPM barrier. I was surprised and delighted to find this was possible. I decided to make this a product for general use by the public. The 1/2 gallon Mason jar was selected. For the next year, I spent every available hour on the project's analog and digital aspects. I did note the time spent, as I would have as an electronics design engineer, my profession before retirement.

When the half-gallon Ultra was ready to ship, we totaled all the costs, including labor. We added a percentage for profit, which anyone who has ever been in business will tell you is necessary if you want to stay in business. The result is the price of the ultra half-gallon as it stands.
After the half-gallon had been available for a year, we decided to take note of the number of people who had asked for a smaller unit. They felt they would use less colloidal silver because of the higher PPM value.
The development costs for the smaller unit were much less because the circuit board and algorithms remained the same as for the half-gallon unit. We only had to go through the recording of the data points of the process and testing. It was done in only four months.
I hope this answers the question factually, if not in an existential manner.

There are a number of studies that have shown that silver ions are an effective treatment for periodontal disease. For example, a study published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology in 2011 found that silver ions were as effective as chlorhexidine mouthwash in reducing the levels of Porphyromonas gingivalis, a major bacteria involved in periodontal disease. Another study, published in the Journal of the American Dental Association in 2012, found that silver ions were more effective than placebo in reducing the levels of P. gingivalis and gingival inflammation.

Silver ions work by killing bacteria through a process called oxidative stress. When silver ions come into contact with bacteria, they release free radicals that damage the bacteria's cell membranes. This damage eventually kills the bacteria.

Quats (quaternary ammonium compounds) are potent disinfectant chemicals commonly found in disinfectant wipes, sprays, and other household cleaners designed to kill germs. It is often the stuff that allows a product to claim to be antibacterial, as they are certified by the EPA as pesticides.
If you make colloidal silver according to the directions detailed in this thread, you can use it as an effective surface disinfectant. It will not have to be removed after application.
So what’s the problem?
In most cases, quats are overkill for everyday household cleaning needs. Unless you plan on doing some open-heart surgery on your kitchen table, there is no need for quats to sterilize the surfaces in your house. We know from lab testing that quats effectively kill many kinds of microbes like E. Coli and Staph. Aureus.
I keep hearing that 10 PPM EIS is all anyone ever needs for anything and any more powerful and any higher ionic level is useless. That is what is being fed the public by the sellers of colloidal silver and even most of the colloidal silver generator manufacturers as well.. Here are the facts:

So there’s no advantage to quats…but there are several downsides
In addition to harming germs, quats are lung irritants and can contribute to asthma and other breathing problems. They irritate skin too – and can lead to rashes. (This is one reason why packages of antibacterial wipes strongly recommend washing your hands after use. A factor that really takes the convenience out of using a wipe in the first place!)

No one has replied to this on the thread, but it was an exciting post and deserved some thought exploration. What does a person want in the way of a colloidal silver generator? Before we answer that, we have to examine how that person got to the point where they wanted to make colloidal silver. No one starts their colloidal silver Journey by deciding they like to make this stuff. Colloidal silver itself had to be needed. The person had to be suffering from some ailment or irritation. They had to be at the point where they were willing to try using something besides what was prescribed by the medical establishment. The medical establishment would have to have failed them. In my case, and the case of many others, it was repeated sinus infections that had failed to be corrected by allopathic medicine. I had gone the whole route of ear nose and throat specialist, ear nose and throat surgery, and allergists. And nothing prevented recurring sinusitis. I tried colloidal silver in desperation. Like most people, I looked askance at alternative medicine as being in the domain of snake oil salespeople and people with a belief system that rendered them susceptible to those salesmen. I finally bought a bottle of colloidal silver for $80 for 8 oz and proceeded to flood my sinus cavities with it. It brought me Immediate relief and has continued to do so. Nothing else had worked. I became a believer. Now, I'm the sort of person who just doesn't know when to quit. I have a big enough ego not fully to understand my intellectual limits. I don't know when to stop. I decided to research The subject thoroughly. Most of the literature available on the issue was in chemistry. My knowledge of chemistry needs to be improved. That proved to be an advantage. The chemical fraternity had in the past believed in certain limits regarding the degree of proportions of silver in a solution of water. It was common knowledge that 25 parts per million was the solubility limit for silver in pure water. It was necessary to coat the silver particles with a substance with positive buoyancy, i.e., a tendency to float to keep the silver particles in the solution above the 25 PPM density. That was done with various techniques, but the positive charge was removed from the particles that are ions. Unfortunately, the silver only became effective once the coating was digested. The silver particle met with oxygen atoms, combining with oxygen atoms, making silver oxide. In this process, silver ions are produced, which kill the microbes and cause health problems. Lacking competence in the chemical Realm, I investigated the process of making colloidal silver electronically. The final Authority in the electrolysis process is a historical figure, Michael Faraday. He wrote the rules of electrolysis. I began researching the process in depth. That had never been done as the chemists ruled the area and were accepted as authorities because the medical community was much more comfortable with chemistry than electricity. Chemists and electronics people should talk to each other more. That is changing because of increasing work on battery Technology, but there is still a way to go.
I had a resource in this journey that was of great use. It was still the early days of the internet, but valuable work was being done on user groups using net groups. The one that I was on was scientific alt scientific electrical engineering design. I started A conversation about colloidal silver. At this time, the subject was immediately trashed by the blue man. This stuff would turn you blue if you were stupid enough to use it. Of course, what they were talking about was silver nitrate. That is what people were calling colloidal silver. Well, okay, it is silver, and it is colloidal. It's silver and in solution, so it's colloidal silver. That's the problem.
There's a lot of stuff that manufacturers can call colloidal silver. That's why we should change the name of what we will try to make. We want to create the silver ion effectively without any substance other than water. We can tell whether or not it's the smallest particle we want By the simple fact that it will be clear. Particles larger than 20 NM will start to interfere with the blue part of the spectrum, making the solution yellow or amber. Some still think it's colloidal silver only if it is Amber because that's all they know how to make. It so happens that the exact opposite is true. It's easy to understand that for a given volume of water, there would be proportionately more particles of a smaller radius than a larger radius. Is this not just common sense? Is it also common sense that tells us that the more particles, the better the chance they have of contacting a microbe that we want to kill? I'm not going to belabor this point. It should be obvious and will be again if you have come this far. To illustrate this, I have gone into much greater detail on the "the art of making the colloidal silver" website. So, we come to a flat statement: when you look at colloidal silver, the fact that it is clear means more and smaller particles. Any color indicates that the particles have combined, resulting in far fewer particles and a less effective solution. Now, how do we achieve this as far as the making of it is concerned? We need some way to stop this Runaway phenomenon. Better yet, prevent it from starting to begin with. How do we do this? We limit the amount of current. How do we do this?
We use what's called a resistor. A resistor restricts the flow of current. It works much the same way as a faucet valve for water flow. There is a Formula called Ohm's law. It states that for a given difference of potential in volts, the current will equal the number of volts divided by the number of ohms. Let's say, for example, that we want to keep a very low current, one milliamp. Let's say we have a 30-volt power supply. What resistor value do we need to achieve this 30 /30,000 or in the way we call resistors 30k?
To begin the process, if we use pure distilled water, which we must, it won't be one milliamp. Pure distilled water has a relatively High Resistance and low conductivity. In the beginning, the current will be much lower than one milliamp and will only gradually increase. That is because if the water is distilled. It will have a relatively High Resistance and low conductivity. That adds to the total resistance in the circuit, so if the water has a resistance of 30,000 and the resistor is 30k, it will have a total of 60k. Therefore, with a current of only one-half of 1 milliamp 500 microamps, you can watch the current gradually increase over time if a millimeter is inserted in a series in the circuit. That is good to do, and it is why, in our starter kit, we included a multimeter to enable you to do just this and watch the progress. The resistance of the water can be varied by moving the silver closer together. That will decrease the resistance. With a certain amount of experimentation for your particular setup, your pieces of silver in your container, you will devise a method for a consistent result. You will be able to produce 10 PPM colloidal silver clear repeatedly. That is as good or better as you can buy anywhere at any shop or by mail. You will be satisfied knowing you have a valuable resource for your health. You don't have to believe that anyone has made it correctly.

So now, let's talk about what you do not want in a colloidal silver generator. The first thing that comes to mind is a fish tank bubbler. This technique came along and was promoted by a guy on the internet who claimed to be a "retired oncologist" but was revealed to be a complete phony and ended up doing jail time. In a previous post, I explained the reason we had to set a limit to the amount of current and, therefore, the rate and size of particles that we took from the anode. That is because there's only so much space to accommodate the particles as they leave the anode surface. If we don't allow enough, they collide and get larger, and we want small ones. This retired oncologist needed to learn more about Electronics to realize he could do this with a resistor. So he came up with the idea of introducing a stream of bubbles, air bubbles, to constantly interrupt the current flow between the anode and cathode. That did prevent the quote runaway and the quote condition that we mentioned. When people were using the 3 9 volt batteries method, they would keep looking at the process and wait until they saw the cloud appear. At this point, they were supposed to stop the process.
Leaving it any longer than this would result in massive particles, large enough to cause some cases of argyria. Now we have to acknowledge that this method did produce colloidal silver. It was Less than 5 PPM and with larger particles than we desired, but still colloidal silver. Silver is such an effective disinfectant antimicrobial that even produced in this crude manner, it undoubtedly saved many lives and relieved people with problems like sinusitis. Colloidal silver Made with this method also needed to be used soon after making it as it was inherently unstable, and the particles would quickly agglomerate and fall to the bottom of the container. That always produced a yellow hue, but those recommending the method would insist that that Color was standard. The bubbler systems did provide an improvement over the three nine methods. Many thousands of colloidal silver generators have been sold that are simply a 39 system with the addition of a cheap aquarium bubbler. A lot of money was made. Some very well-designed websites sell these systems with an incredible number of true stories with pictures telling of the Miracles resulting from parting with $300 for $30 worth of parts. That's the story of free enterprise, but it's still better than the alternative.

HOW DOES SILVER WORK?
In metallic (elemental) form, silver is unreactive and cannot kill bacteria. Silver atoms (denoted as Ag or Ag0) must lose an electron and become positively charged silver ions (Ag+) to become bactericidal. Elemental silver ionizes in the air but ionizes more readily when exposed to an aqueous environment such as wound exudate. In contrast, silver compounds contain positive silver ions bound to negatively charged ions or molecules. Some silver ions become detached from the compound when exposed to aqueous environments.
Silver ions are highly reactive and affect multiple sites within bacterial cells, ultimately causing bacterial cell death. They bind to bacterial cell membranes, disrupting the bacterial cell wall and cell leakage. Silver ions transported into the cell disrupt cell function by binding to proteins and interfering with energy production, enzyme function, and cell replication. Silver ions are active against many bacteria, fungi, and viruses, including many antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE).
Studies of the effects of silver dressings on experimental models of biofilms have
suggested that silver may reduce bacterial adhesion, destabilize the biofilm matrix, kill bacteria within the matrix, and increase the susceptibility of bacteria to antibiotics.
Some laboratory studies have suggested that silver may have beneficial effects on wound healing besides the control of bioburden alone. For example, silver nitrate, nanocrystalline silver, and some silver-containing dressings have been found to have anti-inflammatory effects and encourage blood vessel formation (neovascularization).
Only a small proportion of silver presented to a wound site in a dressing is involved in
antimicrobial action. Most of the rest remains within the dressing or binds to proteins in the
wound or wound debris. Very little is systemically absorbed.
Even if absorbed systemically, silver is excreted mainly via the biliary route in feces. Some is excreted in the urine. Silver is not absorbed into the central or peripheral nervous systems.

The information in the post above applies to silver dressings or dressings containing silver. These are compounds formed into a cream or ointment. In the case of the silver ionic silver that we make on this thread, much of the information does not apply. With the presence of a significant number of silver ions and especially in the case of the 50 PPM ionic supplied by the ultra generators, the 50 PPM is readily absorbed by the skin. In the case of a wound or burn, I place a piece of quality toilet paper and pour or use an eyedropper to wet the toilet paper. The toilet paper will attach to the skin as the water component evaporates. More ionic silver can be applied to the tissue. That will ensure a constant supply of silver ions to the wound area and surrounding tissue—no waste, mess, or need to clean.
