Zelenskyy calls Kherson liberation 'beginning of the end of the war'
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy walked the streets of the newly liberated city of Kherson on Monday, hailing Russia's withdrawal as the "beginning of the end of the war," but also acknowledging the heavy price Ukrainian troops are paying in their effort to push back the invaders.

The retaking of Kherson was one of Ukraine's biggest successes in the nearly nine-month war, dealing another stinging blow to the Kremlin. It could serve as a springboard for more advances into occupied territory.

U.S. President Joe Biden called it a "significant victory" for Ukraine.

"I can do nothing but applaud the courage, determination and capacity of the Ukrainian people, the Ukrainian military," he said on the sidelines of a Group of 20 summit in Indonesia.

Large parts of eastern and southern Ukraine are still under Russian control, and the city of Kherson itself remains within reach of Moscow's shells and missiles. Heavy fighting continued elsewhere in Ukraine.

Russia's state news agency RIA Novosti reported that the town of Oleshky, in Russian-held territory across the river from Kherson, came under heavy artillery fire.

Re: Zelenskyy calls Kherson liberation 'beginning of the end of the war'
Zalenski needs to lay off the crack. Russia is not going to stop until all of the territory of the 4 annexed oblasts are secured. Then they will talk. In the eyes of the Russians, the AFU are intruders on their homeland. They won't stop until they have driven all of the AFU forces out, or when all of the AFU forces are dead. Whichever Zalenski chooses.

As soon as the ground freezes, Russia is going to launch an offensive that will be totally unlike anything we have seen thus far that will completely overwhelm AFU forces to hopefully try to bring a quick end to the war.

Meat grinder.
If Ukraine keeps “winning” battles like this, there won’t be enough Ukrainians to hold onto the country and the war will be lost.

Poor political optics for Russia to choose to retreat and lose the battle.
I can only guess that Russia has objectives that are more important than political optics.

Also, the Ukrainian President Zelensky, whatever else you may think of him, was a great actor in Servant of the People (comedy), where he portrayed a history teacher who stumbled into being President of Ukraine.

Next Ukraine army will cut off supply to the area south of Melitopol.

All the troops there and any in Crimea will be cut off from food and resupply. Crimea will have no water. And they will have no food without water.

Both will fall pretty easily. No supplies like Kherson.

Donetsk and Luhansk will be much more difficult for Ukraine.
