My wife has family, her aunt, nephews, nieces, there buried under the rubble, they can hear them crying, there is nobody there that can help or move the rubble.

Her uncle sensed the shake, grabbed the child and ran out.
The rest, grandparents, kids and his wife, were just a little slower and fell in the collapsing building.

Imagine being in that situation?

What causes this to happen? It's not a subduction fault, I don't think. I thought it was like San Andreas where one is moving up and the other down (East/West in the case of the East Anatolia fault line).

This reminds me so much of the 1995 Neftegorsk earthquake.

Half the people in town died, 25% injured, the rest took off, town was never rebuilt.

Those poor people! I remember those Soviet-era apartment bldgs. That is just so unimaginably tragic. An entire town - just gone :(

Yes there is a city named Bam near Kerman. I visited Kerman I did not get to Bam.
