If you want to believe that, far be it from me to change your mind. Take pics if you ever pull a head. Better yet, get an endoscope.

so let me get this straight.

you bought a $100 aftermarket cylinder management system that fucks with the cylinders. and you can't figure out what they problem is
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80963621

It doesn't "fuck with the cylinders".

It stops the V-6 from shutting off half the cylinders and shortening the life of the engine.

It was also done 2 years ago. no temporal correlation.

I cleaned it a year ago with MAF sensor cleaner. It looked clean already, but it made a significant improvement.

Crap fuel.

Probably related to too much ethanol.

I'd suggest changing your fuel filter as a start.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85646563

The filter is probably not the issue, if there's a blockage, it's due to combustion of shitty fuel...I have proven to my son, on our 1000 mile trip starting last Monday, that premium fuel is the best simply because it has detergents in it. The service engine light came on after he started using cheap fuel, and on the trip I asked him to put premium in it...After about 30 miles running premium from a tank on empty (6 miles left) the light went out and stayed out...Now he believes me...
 Quoting: BRIEF

All gasoline has detergents in it. All premium fuel does is makes your wallet lighter, unless you have a high compression engine that requires it for the higher octane (anti knock) number
 Quoting: JustmeTX

The higher octane does eliminate ping and knock, but there are more and better detergents in premium...there may be SOME detergents in cheaper fuel, but not as concentrated or as powerful...Gas never hurt my wallet, but it has extended the life of engines and fuel system components...
 Quoting: BRIEF

Part of the problem is that with direct injection engines, the fuel no longer washes over the intake valves.

I think I will start doing those Seafoam or CRC valve cleaning operations once every 10,000 miles.

When I replaced the spark plugs a couple months ago, I was surprised how black and cruddy they looked for only around 50,000 miles on the clock. Well, the ones in the back anyway. Those were the ones that the Variable cylinder system had been shutting off.

Here is Scotty flapping his wings and talking about it. :)

Here in Indiana we had VET or emission testing for quite a long time. I helped many people get through emission testing with my knowledge and expertise, but that probably means nothing. Am I right?

You are right- that means nothing. Many shops helped people get through emission testing. If you had attended seminars, classes and spoken to “chemical people” and had expertise in, well, anything, you wouldn’t have just run some small town daddy/son little mechanics garage. The way you talk yourself up, you should’ve done much better than that. But you didn’t. And you aren’t anything. Except for in your inflated persona on a website. You should be embarrassed like your family is about you.

Re: OK, my turn to ask a car question.
Update. Was still getting a very occasional bauble at idle.

Just got done doing a throttle body cleaning, did another MAF sensor cleaning while I was under there, and did maybe 1/4 can of seafoam in the intake with it running around 1800 rpm.

Relearned the throttle position sensor, cleared the code I generated while spraying the Seafoam in the hole for the MAF sensor. It set a code because it didn't have the MAF sensor connected I guess. Cleared the code.

Took it for a spin. Super smooth. I think that finally fixed it. If not I will swap out a new idle control valve.

Thanks for the ideas y'all. :)
