Two things.

Politically Zelensky is increasingly on shaky ground with the loss of it.

And also it is the only remaining stronghold on the ridge before the Russians can get to the ridgeline at Siversk and Chasiv Yar. The Ukrainians will need to build hasty defences on that ridgeline unlike the concrete well constructed defences that held the Bakhmut area. They also lack the quality troops to hold that line as most of them died defending Bhakmut.

That means they commit the troops trained in the west to the defensive line giving up the idea of an offensive entirely, or they use militia.

If they forego any offensive they risk losing western support who need thrilling media accounts to spin up money and support for the Ukraine.

After that it is the Donetsk River line.

Losing Bahkmut unhinges the Central Front, and allows the Russians to start trying to take the four large Torets River Valley cities.

Instead of heavily defending just one place, they now have to try and defend 4 large cities at the same time.

Bahkmut was built by the.Soviets to be a fortress city in the event of an attack by NATO, it is why the high-rise blocks had 20+ mile line-of-sites and 3-5 ft thick walls.
