Bill intriduced in House to stop drone surveillance in America!
I just got this letter from my rep. in DC. Surpisingly, it seems she paid attention to what I wrote her several times. Everyone should write their reps and senators to support this bill.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo) joined 22 of her colleagues in introducing H.R. 6199, the Preserving American Privacy Act, which is designed to protect individual citizens’ privacy from the increasing domestic use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), or drones. Already deployed on the battlefield and along our nation’s borders, drones are now being used domestically by private and governmental entities. H.R. 6199 would: prohibit drone surveillance without a warrant; prohibit drone surveillance by private entities without the subject’s consent; and, prohibit agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency from using drone-collected surveillance in administrative hearings.

“This is another instance of new technology challenging our constitutional rights, and the Constitution should always win,” Rep. Lummis said. “Drones are and will continue to be a great tool for our military and Border Patrol. But drones also dramatically enhance the government’s ability to spy on Americans, so we need to set a privacy standard to prevent unauthorized drone flights over our backyards. H.R. 6199 strikes a balance between law enforcement and individual freedom that I believe is consistent with the Constitution.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) currently grants permits for limited drone use on a case-by-case basis. Numerous domestic federal agencies (including the EPA), research institutions and state and local law enforcement currently have active permits. The FAA is also working towards the wholesale integration of drones into United States airspace by 2015.

The Preserving American Privacy Act would:

• Prohibit the FAA from issuing a drone permit for law enforcement or surveillance purposes unless the activity is pursuant to a warrant and in the investigation of a felony. This prohibition would be applicable to State, Federal, and local jurisdictions.

• Prohibit the FAA from issuing a drone permit to any private individual for person or property surveillance unless the person under surveillance has consented or the owner of the property has consented.

• Prohibit evidence obtained by drones from being used by federal agencies in administrative hearings.

• Preserve the current use of drones for border security purposes and within 25 miles of a United States border.

Sincerely,

Cynthia M. Lummis

Member of Congress

Very good news!

Let's hope they are able to get something actually done. May be tough with Democrats in control of the Senate.

This one probably is. Most of my responses are more personal, not news letters like this one. I write her so often that someone actually responds. It probably isn't her, but it is a person responding. I suspect it is an assistant, but at least someone is reading and responding. This one is just a news letter, but it is important.

I think UAV's are cool but this legislation is absolutely necessary. They should not be operating without being restricted by warrants.

It's too bad that an effective campaign to eliminate what could be one of the most important and essential tools we have against the true enemies among us will succeed.

I suppose the greater evil that these drones have the capacity for, and the potential for abuse is greater than the good they can do at preventing devastating attacks.

If you had nothing to hide, then you had nothing to fear.

Our border security flaws have been exploited, immigration policies exploited, our tolerances exploited.

Our vulnerabilities have made our doom possible.

We'd rather die free, then to live with enhanced security.

Right?

Careful what you wish for.

The borders are a good use for these drones. Catching illegals is not a priority for Oblabla though. These will be used to spy on us instead of the illegals coming in every day. With the military running war games where the TEA party is the enemy, you can guess what is going to happen next. Since most of us on GLP fit the administration's definition of "terrorist" I think we all have some thing to fear. As gun owners, veterans, TEA partyers, and preppers, we are obviously a much bigger threat to national security than 20 million illegals, and presidential friends like Bill Ayers, Saul Alynski, and Van Jones. Communists and socialists are OK, but they must stop the Constitutionalists!

What mind warping bs...I do not mind "enhanced security" but I do not see the need for the free for all of collecting data on US citizens by gov't or private entities. They should be made to produce a warrant...where does it end?
