I have a 175lb crossbow with a scope, and some custom carbon bolts.

Is this a good weapon to go hunting with if something happens?

I have reusable ammo, so that's a plus, it's pretty accurate at 50 yards, but reloading takes a few seconds.

I'd like to own a 1911, or something similar as a sidearm.

You certainly won't face a militia with it, but for hunting as you mentioned it can be great. No noise, effective even against some nasty creatures like boars. It also can be used for some other stuff, like grappling hooks and fishing. The advantages is if you learn some fletching skills you can craft some very cool stuff with commonly found materials, like arrow tips with glass shards, tin cans and some others. It is also possible to make some impact explosive arrows with some more sophisticated materials, kinda hard and dangerous, but for sure not impossible. And happy birthday!

Yeah it's pretty powerful, I like it.

The cool thing is it's not very heavy either.

For hunting and surviving it's good; plenty; especially if you can craft your own bolts and keep it in good repair. Keep it oiled and rust free; perhaps dig into it's inner workings and make sure that it's all steel for the mechanisms. You don't want to rely on plastic for longevity.

A bow would be great too. In some situations it would be more desirable than a crossbow.

Bows are able to be shot faster.

I never really got into archery, I'm more of a gunpowder and lead type of guy, but the cool thing about a crossbow is that it's a hybrid.

Which is pretty awesome.

The downside is if you just shot ya bolt and something big and nasty is about 10 seconds away from you...it will take longer than that to reload aim and fire.

With a bow you can get a shot off every 5 seconds.

With a crossbow its every 20 seconds.

Crossbows are excellent to have, I will be getting one for myself along with a high-powered air rifle too.

There are times when being extremely quiet and saving your ammo will be a great advantage.

A good pellet gun is excellent for taking out small game silently. Saving your real ammo for when you really need it.

I designed and fabricated a pistol crossbow thatworks and loads much faster than the chinese ones. Its pretty badass. Uses standard crossbow pistol bolts. Takes racoons and rabbits and geese down quick... Never tried it on a deer.

Ya, I know, they make them in large calibers too now for even big game animals.

That is what I was thinking about getting first.

I had a standard sized pump type pellet gun that could kill goats, if you shot them in the head when I was a kid.

I think that was made by Sheridan.

Hatsan Turkish air rifles I've heard are pretty good now.

I have yet to verify and check out their varying calibers though.

When I was in college I had a crossbow. It wasn't a very good one, but it was fun. I dry fired it at my room mate as he was coming down the stairs and he about had a heart attack.

if you can't use it to feed yourself today, what hope do you have when you are cold and wet with snot running down your face?

Small game will be wiped out hours after the lights go out. Hundreds of thousands of ill prepared people are going to be stumbling around the bush.

But crossbows/bows/sling shots are the cheapest choice and will take the abuse of laying around in the mud with you

Yes.NOT silent, neither is an air or spring powered pellet weapon.I prefer a recurve bow, easier to maintain.IMO.
