Wow yes I totally remember this when I was little! I was born in 71 (feeling really OLD now!). I don't know why but it used to really freak me out - especially at the end when the colored bar test pattern and long beeeep came on. What really freaked me out the most was at the very end when the bug-races came on, LOL. And this was several years pre-Poltergeist! For some reason broadcast sign off felt scary to me so I'd try to hurry up and get in my bed before it started. My mom (born in 47) would be out in the living room turning off the TV - but not until the National Anthem was done playing. She always had to watch that part. For some reason the Anthem scared me - not sure why. I think it reminded me of war or something...like it signified the end of the world. Still gives me the creeps when I watch and listen to it!

I remember watching Yuri Gagarin's flight to Space on the family's black and white TV on the day it happened and all the subsequent events. The huge official welcome at the Kremlin with President Kruschev and all that.

They were huge boxes at the time. No flat screen TVs even less colour TVs.

I remember as a kid turning off the TV every time that came on because 'Poltergeist' freaked me out.:jay:
 Quoting: Dace

ohyeah I hated the static too after that.
 Quoting: NOLAangel

Had the BIG furniture-box TV with the 'extra-deluxe' 2nd giant clear plastic dial...top dial went through channel 33 but had a 'UHF' selection, where then you could fine tune the 2nd dial...:jay:

.....and in the end STILL only pick up maybe 5 stations on a good day.
 Quoting: Dace

In my area, we only had 3 channels to choose from: ABC, CBS, NBC. Those were the days of live television. Even the commercials were live.

The sound with the test pattern was to get you to turn off your TV for the night. I think there may have been fears that the picture tube would burn out if left on to a steady pattern all night.

I remember way before that one when it was in black and white!
 Quoting: Zovalex

Me, too. I even remember before TV stations went to 20K watts. Before that the picture was almost too snowy to see.

Saturday westerns was where it was at in those days: Sky King, Hoppalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers, Gene Autre, the guy in a black mask and cape who rode a black horse, The Cisco Kid, etc. I'm sure there were others but I don't remember them off hand.

I remember it in the 80's. Hell, probably even into the early 90's. Back before everything was a constant 24-7 feed.

I remember in the late 50s when a neighbor a couple of doors down bought a "color screen" that went in front of the TV screen and displayed a very raw color TV.

The screen was green in color but had the colors of the rainbow somehow embedded in it. It fit right over the picture screen. I don't know how it stayed put, static electricity, maybe. In essence, they were able to see color TV.

On a clear night we would loosen up and turn the antenna and get a 3rd channel.
Now that was good times especially when your friends missed all that blurry action and you had to tell them about the show.

I vaguely remember a test pattern that resembled what looked like a nuclear symbol of sorts. Was black and white like the Indian one.
