Add to that soybeans, and you are talking about massive grain shortages. Quoting: Cheyenne 6 million acres of corn produce, on average, 54 billion pounds of dry kernel corn. That's 168 pounds of corn per every person in the US that will not exist this next year. Add to that 4 million acres of soybeans potentially not planted. That would be 34 pounds per person lost. It's not like all that corn would go to people food. Corn goes into ethanol and animal feed. like about 2/3. Then there's high fructose corn syrup, which we could do without, and corn oil, ditto. Soy is a terrible food. Better off without it. We'll be OK. maybe better off except Cali when it cant get ethanol As it turns out, we might be flooded with ethanol. If this wet weather continues until harvest we might have a larger fraction contaminated with aflatoxin and have no choice but to send it to the distillery. This does mean a smaller fraction for food and feed purposes and the cost will be higher because farmers have to artificially dry it before sending to market. Edit: and the export market becomes much smaller since most countries have a much lower limit of aflatoxin than the US. In a buying frenzy our premium grains will be much more valuable than what the domestic market is used to paying. Last Edited by Lowkey Cyberpunk on 07/05/2019 09:33 PM "Yes, yes. Zathras is used to being beast of burden to other people's needs. Very sad life. Probably have very sad death. But, at least there is symmetry." |

Quoting: 7..X.LePsihoLog how much energy is spent to produce that amount of food that is thrown away?... This is a disingenuous argument, the vegetables that are thrown away have only a fraction of the calories of grains which is what is being discussed here. You don't see feedlot operations on green peppers or lettuce or brussel sprouts. Grains are the foundation of high calorie food services. Now vegetables are fine for a balanced diet and I plan on growing them but for my own personal survival, I have taken steps to grow grains. Then starches, like potatoes. But to focus on tomatoes being thrown away as some kind of crisis? I'm not all impressed at this point. Bring a more developed argument. Edit: to focus on tomatoes being thrown away as if they would solve the hunger problems that we already have is a trailing edge solution to a problem that has evolved. You haven't answered my questions but I shall endeavor to answer yours. Modern agriculture spends so many calories to plant a field, to care for it, to harvest it. And then it goes to market. How many calories are we getting per vegetable? How many per grain? To put the onus on people who are throwing out vegetables is to show an incomplete view of crops in this country. You might focus on vegetables and lose perspective on the wider view. We won't survive on vegetables. "Yes, yes. Zathras is used to being beast of burden to other people's needs. Very sad life. This is a start, thank you. The largest part of wasted food is vegetables which is why I needed you to say that you weren't concerned with that fraction. It would be a fruitless endeavor otherwise. Meat and grain, that's the part that we should be concerned with. After all, the greatest energy of our food chain goes into that part. Well, dairy and eggs would be part of that. I've never given a second thought to proteins on sale even though I know the implications. After a while you accept what is offered and hope that you aren't permanently damaged when you are able to shift to a better form of production. In light of what is coming, we (at least I) can't be choosy with what we can get. It isn't my view that I'm always correct, I often have faulty reasoning. I welcome challenges to my thinking as long as they have strong reasoning behind them. Expect my challenges when I challenge you! Last Edited by Lowkey Cyberpunk on 07/07/2019 08:46 PM "Yes, yes. What I call the "good" brand of instant mashed potatoes, Idahoan, had several missing flavors, though I found most of my favorites. No "loaded baked" variety. I didn't check the canned food aisle, but soup aisle seemed well-stocked. This is western Washington out on the coast. The discount grocery I usually shop has been having sales on chicken parts. Yesterday I purchased chicken drumsticks for .99 per pound - cannot beat that! Need to go back for another family-sized package. I hope people are reading and thinking and realizing the need for purchasing your foods now, while they are available and not 50-100% more than today!
