How would you change gun laws if you thought it would really change anything | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 76998126 United States 09/01/2019 10:58 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Why would a law prevent actions by law breakers? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69659606 Law breakers dont obey laws. Isnt it illegal to shoot people now? Just like it's illegal to run people over. Which is why we have proficiency exams and training. No one is saying that making laws stricter cuts down the number of gun deaths, it does allow for professional scrutiny of how a person acts around weapons. And adding insurance can help defray the cost of gun violence has on heath care, law enforcement and society. I find it VERY suspicious when someone is against someone evaluating their behavior when it comes to dangerous weapons. If people have money for multiple weapons, they have money to put in the fund! |

gnostic9 User ID: 71056695 United States 09/01/2019 11:14 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | No law will change a person's behavior, so you can't legislate civility and non-violence. However, we can use some common sense. Two things I'd like to see. When a background check is done, it only looks at whether the person has a felony conviction, restraining order, etc., but doesn't check if the applicant has a history of mental illness because that "violates" their medical privacy rights. We need to change that, and have certain types of mental health treatment be categorized so that some people can't buy guns. They can still acquire them illegally, so this isn't a "solution" but it will make it harder for the mentally ill to easily acquire guns. The other thing we need to change is the way we sentence violent criminals. We need to stop with the indexing B.S. This crime = this many years incarceration and instead start categorizing people as uncivil and violent. Currently, when a person fully intends to murder someone and attempts to do so, but fails in some way, such as missing their target, or only hitting the target but not lethally, they are sentenced far more leniently than one who succeeds in killing. This is ridiculous. The two criminals are the same. But we reward the less competent, and they are sometimes released on probation. In most cases of violent murder, the offender has a long rap sheet that clearly identified them as a danger to society long before they committed their first murder. Violent people need to be identified and isolated. They should not be released, anymore than a person with a lethal infectious disease would not be released. This is simple common sense. I seriously propose the return of penal colonies. Once a person has made it abundantly clear that they intend to operate outside the bounds of civil society, they should lose their rights to live among the rest of us. Currently, we take a person who rapes, stabs, shoots, attempts to murder, etc., and we basically put them on a time-out. After they've "paid their debt" (which is a ridiculous concept and wrong approach) they are released into the population where they can and will harm again. We need to stop saying, "You owe society five years incarceration, and then you can be trusted to be free again" and instead say, "You've been identified as a lethal threat to your fellow humans and will thus be excluded from living among decent people." |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 77506855 United States 09/01/2019 11:18 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Gun laws are not the problem. The USA used to have guns everywhere and nobody shot anyone. Its the erosion of morals of the left that is driving gun violence. Turn back to a sound moral code and the gun violence goes away. We all know that this is true but too many people will do anything to keep their favorite sin even if it means other people will die. We see this in almost ALL of the political positions of the Left. |

Release all non-violent drug offenders from prison. We're going to need some room. Any person committing a gun crime will be tried as an adult. Any gun crime will carry a 25 year mandatory minimum. If a life is lost committing a gun crime then the mandatory minimum is 50 years. Let's start with that. As horrific as these "mass shootings" are the lives lost are a drop in the bucket compared to the massacres that happen in our inner cities every night. One more thing. People that use medical marijuana cannot legally purchase/own a firearm. Let's extend that to include people on psychotropic prescriptions too. |

Since Big Brother is everywhere, and most people spill their guts online anyway, whatever bullshit a person spews online about guns would be fair game to search them for unregistered weapons.
