Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77503133 Adding to pollution and landfills is not a solution to the problem obviously. Is this a thread for lazy people to feel justified in throwing everything away and not bother with recycling? It would seem so... Who you calling lazy? I've been recycling for almost two decades. For the first 13 years, I collected and separated my trash, occupying more than trash's fair share of my garage, and carried it to the town recycling center twice a month, all because I thought I was helping. For the last 7 years, my town has imposed a fee on me to pay for the extra collection every other Friday by the recycling truck. It is not my business to "IMPROVE recycling." I have neither the education nor experience in such matters, and the one person on this thread who does doesn't recycle because 85% of it just ends up in an incinerator. I've done my part, and now, the people who got me to go WAY out of my way for almost half my life tell me their best efforts are actually counterproductive. Incidentally, a better solution has already been proposed, and is currently being used. Burn trash for energy and use scrubbers to ensure the smoke doesn't escape the facility. That seems like the only viable solution to me. It's real easy to come in here and demand we "IMPROVE recycling." That's where we get virtue signalling ideas like making everybody drive electric cars and banning natural gas, both of which do nothing to save the environment. They don't solve anything, but they make people like you feel good about yourselves while forcing other people to modify their behavior. we need trees... lots of trees.... |

Quoting: Tree of Life So, recycling became an important tool to keep down the amount of transferred waste. After a decade of receiving glass that was separated out of the garbage stream by conscientious recyclers, there was no longer any market for the glass, and the county was stuck with finding a way to get rid of it. So, their answer was to crush the glass and use it like gravel on the roads within the transfer station. What a waste for all of those who washed out and seperated their pickle and jam jars.... and putting crushed glass on a road is not a very bright idea, now is it!?? only the local tire store likes it! However, with an all-out recycling program, must also have an all-out re-manufacturing plant. For newsprint and all paper, a paper pulper. For metal, obviously forges and crucibles to remelt and then reform the metals. Those who fought against trash incinerators didn't think it completely through, unfortunately. |

Surprisingly (to me, anyway), glass not so much. Plastic profitability depends on oil prices. If oil prices are down, it's cheaper to make new plastics. All that said, the other side of the issue is pollution and the Japanese guy's plastic-to-oil machine should be in use everywhere. If it were brought to scale, it would have to cheaper than drilling and FAR safer and cleaner. As for glass, when it's ground up it make lots of great products from concrete mixes to countertops. Glass is just sand, yes? Grind that shit up! In his poem Human Pride, Marx admits that his aim is not to improve the world, reform or revolutionize it, but simply to ruin it and enjoy it being ruined: With disdain I will throw my gauntlet full in the face of the world, And see the collapse of this pygmy giant whose fall will not stifle my ardor. I know it's a business and involves profits but there's nothing wrong with that if it works. From what I gather, it's not all bad or all good. It's basically glass, cans, plastic and paper. Glass is not toxic so that's not a big concern. Cans are profitable because it's cheaper to recycle the metal than to make new. Plastic is probably something the a lot of recycle companies are trashing and that's a shame when you look at that simple machine the Japanese man invented. That's something that should be scaled up and used. Paper, at least, breaks down. Dunno about the toxicity of the inks.
