wanna 'save' the planet? BAN RECYCLING

Who you calling lazy? I've been recycling for almost two decades. For the first 13 years, I collected and separated my trash, occupying more than trash's fair share of my garage, and carried it to the town recycling center twice a month, all because I thought I was helping. For the last 7 years, my town has imposed a fee on me to pay for the extra collection every other Friday by the recycling truck. It is not my business to "IMPROVE recycling." I have neither the education nor experience in such matters, and the one person on this thread who does doesn't recycle because 85% of it just ends up in an incinerator. I've done my part, and now, the people who got me to go WAY out of my way for almost half my life tell me their best efforts are actually counterproductive.

Incidentally, a better solution has already been proposed, and is currently being used. Burn trash for energy and use scrubbers to ensure the smoke doesn't escape the facility. That seems like the only viable solution to me.

It's real easy to come in here and demand we "IMPROVE recycling." That's where we get virtue signalling ideas like making everybody drive electric cars and banning natural gas, both of which do nothing to save the environment. They don't solve anything, but they make people like you feel good about yourselves while forcing other people to modify their behavior.

I tried to have un-used paint gallons recycled. They told me to bag and toss it in the trash. Same with cooking oil.

What a joke.

It's just a big scam to scare and control what you do.

the only recycling that has any good impact is metal cans. The rest is only training you to be good little recyclers.

one day, maybe it will benefit the planet. but right now it it is a NET HARM.

Environmentalism changed our local dump to a transfer station, where the trash is trucked to a regional landfill.

So, recycling became an important tool to keep down the amount of transferred waste.

After a decade of receiving glass that was separated out of the garbage stream by conscientious recyclers, there was no longer any market for the glass, and the county was stuck with finding a way to get rid of it.

So, their answer was to crush the glass and use it like gravel on the roads within the transfer station.

What a waste for all of those who washed out and seperated their pickle and jam jars.... and putting crushed glass on a road is not a very bright idea, now is it!??

How can it be a harm? When the recycle company sorts it, some gets trashed but not all (like cans and glass). You're still ending up with less going to landfills and some really does get recycled.

Well, in my town in Kalifornia we are required to recycle.

3 different companies service our area with three giant trucks each. One for trash, one for recycling and one for green waste. 9 large trucks driving past every home each week.

They keep raising prices because of fuel costs. Now about $70 a month.

Medical care and food safety today is unthinkable without plastic

so is cell phone communication, or typing on a computer keyboard.

I am thankful for plastics....


disposal options? the microbes mentioned in a recent thread that digest plastic....

or incineration. Good old incineration is making a comeback as scrubbers make it safe and effective. AND it ends the recycling horrors outlined in the original link.

may find an article about the resurgence of modern incineration.


used to be, no school was constructed without this capability.

are you required to pay for it, or required to DO it? as in, if paper makes it into your trash, they pitch a fit?

Over 50 years ago, I had my first job at a local hospital and one of my routines on Friday was to feed the incinerator with boxes. That was my most favorite part of the week! Watching those flames just eat the stuff!

We got warnings in the town that if they see recyclable material in our trash instead of recycling, we could be fined for each item. I highly doubt anyone enforces that though? Never saw anyone inspect either bin.

special recycling containers must be made and delivered to each house.... this involves TONS of plastic.

making the plastic, transporting it, etc etc etc.

then people are told to wash containers they recycle - lots of water used for this. hot water often.

Then either a special heavier truck must be run to get the trash/recycling on the same day


OR two separate runs are made.

Single stream recycling involves TONS of labor - read people driving to work.

Or it is sent overseas.... again, more energy expended.

recycling paper uses toxic chemicals. They must be manufactured somewhere.

many hidden factors make recycling wrong.... they are all small but add up.

the biggest reason is that there is no market for this stuff.
