My bank keeps asking me what my occupation is when I do a transaction at the bank. Why the repeated question?

For example, when your weekly $250 direct deposit goes into the bank's vault, they want to know if you ditched your fast food job to become a starbucks barista or vice versa.

I always tell them im gonna buy a hooker and cocaine.

Today, I did tell her "Attorney General" - and what's funny is that she gave a "oh!" look, and typed it into the database, as if she believed me. Then she completed the transaction with me. Weird stuff.

I read off google today, that one reason they ask for your occupation is for what interest rates to offer you when they send out advertisements to you for loans. Some professions are more responsible than others for being responsible with their money. So, they use the occupation as a factor in the way they look at your CREDIT!

Also I read about the Patriot Act, and how they encourage banks to ask these questions. Someone else mentioned that in this thread.

I wonder if the bank teller gets a commission or incentive ($3.50) for each time they find something that might be "suspicious" to them. It does seem like EVERY time I do a transaction at the bank, the tell is totally scrutinizing all my accounts. Maybe it is in the teller's job description to be the "front line investigator", and analyze the customer's accounts each time they step up to the teller desk.

Lol - Yeah, an on-going investigation where they interrogate me for my job title / occupation. Pfft They know where every penny of mine comes from in detail.

I haven't applied for a loan since 2015. I do have 3 credit card accounts with them - maybe they are analyzing whether I use my credit cards enough.

Only one branch asks for my occupation regularly - I think it has something to do with the management of that specific branch. I go to many branches and they never ask that.

Bingo, probably. And offer interest rates that match my occupation.

I wonder if these teller girls are just trying to get personal information on me, to gossip about me to other teller girls, and then try to get me out on a date.

And yup, she asked me about my withdrawl today - "Are you paying some bills?" I just told her - "yep!"

It's not a moron bank - such as BOA, Wells Fargo, or Chase.
It is one of the responsible ones when looking at the past real estate crash of 2008.

Yeah, it is strange. And I get asked that even when depositing a check.

I really believe the tellers are given incentive to dig as deep as they can, to over-reach and try to find red flag con artist stuff.

And I think the teller chicks want to chat with me for personal reasons. They probably want me in the sack if I have enough money for them.

Banks need to know your occupation so that their AI can better judge if your transactions look legit or if you need to be red flagged for money laundering or narcotics trade, for instance.

I agree with this totally, however my bank is pretty damn good. The problem is with this one branch only, as far as I know.

And I've got credit union accounts also. Have both!

If this is true, then someone who is money laundering would just tell the bank what they want to hear.

And they keep asking me repeatedly. What would trigger them to ask me this over and over - about every OTHER time that I go there. And the teller can tell where I get my paycheck with one glance at my checking account.

They prob want to know HOW you think. And how you manage money. I read today online that engineers and electricians are BETTER at handling money than lawyers and doctors, for example. Then they offer the perfect loans to everyone with this information.

The teller looks at my perfectly managed, under-used credit card accounts, then wonders if there is a way she can be involved in SELLING me some kind of loan. The teller is probably looking to get some kind of commission by selling bank loans indirectly.

Oh they DEFINITELY snoop your accounts! Just watch them next time you go to the bank - they spend plenty of time looking through your accounts while you stand there. And that makes sense, but they act like they WANT to find something....and usually probably find a way to SELL you a loan or some other service or account.

Does anyone know? Do bank tellers get commission for being involved in selling a loan to a bank customer?
