The "extinction" in Extinction Rebellion doesn't just refer to the extinction of all the plants and animals around us. It means us.

"We are currently headed for a planet that is incompatible with human life," says the young woman leading the introduction. "We're on a trajectory for 5 degrees of warming by the end of the century. Extinction Rebellion takes the view this is the biggest existential threat of our history."

Core to the Extinction Rebellion, also known as XR, is a demand for urgent, drastic action on climate change. To get there, they are using non-violent direct action calling on the tradition of the suffragettes, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and the Freedom Riders and more recently, the Occupy movement and Black Lives Matter.

Is the Extinction Rebellion a small rump of radical activists with extremist views - or the birth of a genuine mass-movement? While it aspires to the latter, it is early days - especially in Australia.

Thirty people have been arrested at an environmental rally in Sydney's CBD.

Police took protesters into custody one-by-one as they staged a sit-in on Broadway, near Railway Square, on Monday afternoon while onlookers cheered.

The protest is one of multiple events around the world this week organised by Extinction Rebellion, a global protest movement calling for drastic action on climate change.

Organisers said up to 400 people gathered at Belmore Park about 1.30pm on Monday before beginning a march towards Chippendale.

But the rally stalled near Central Station for over an hour as protesters congregated in the middle of the road to sing, perform music and chant, which interrupted westbound traffic down Broadway.

One group of activists locked themselves in a pink water tank with the slogan "Blood of the Earth" while police tried to remove them.

Police said protesters allegedly committed a range offences during the protest, such as obstructing traffic and disobeying reasonable direction.

"We are aware that this particular group of protesters intend to cause significant disruption to the community, and any future activity of this nature will not be tolerated by NSW Police," he said.
