It includes lecture and bed side demonstration and practice time. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76821739 This last year, for the first time... I notice so many student are zoning out shutting their eyes. Before you write nasty notes to me about my teaching, I will say NO.... it is not me as a teacher. I talk loud and I am very engaging instructor. I think it is something else. There minds are over-whelmed. Also kids today don't seem to have just common sense. Nursing is very technical and very step by step memorization of clinical skills. I have taught these classes for over 17 years. I am keeping the AC down lower to make them cold so they wont go to sleep. But I truly believe something is very off her with the young people. Blame technology and parenting. |

Hate to say it but many kids/teens in school have tried to sleep in class for decades. Difference today is teachers are afraid to discipline or raise their voice at them out of fear someone's going to video tape them on their cell phone. So they just ignore it and continue on. If you think I"m wrong next time you see a kid sleeping in your class.. Slam your hand on their desk and raise your voice and say if you want to sleep in my class get out! and kick them out of class. Guess how many other kids will be sleeping the rest of class. Last Edited by Shamrock007 on 01/05/2020 04:39 PM |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 62993873 United States 01/05/2020 04:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My observations after 23 years as a youth minister and now as a regular guy in the workaday world with people of all ages, many in their 20s. In no particular order: Tech is disrupting sleep. People never shut down. Smart phones are on 24/7 and accessed at all hours, for hours. Many young men are playing video games until the wee hours of the morning. I’ve known several who are severely addicted to World of Warcraft type games and I’ve seen it destroy marriages. Young men that I work with come dragging-ass into work, talking about “I didn’t get any sleep/I was up until 4 am playing video games.” Energy drinks: many younger people are addicted to huge amounts of stimulant and sugar. They’re either hyper or crashing. The effect of these drinks on some is very pronounced; a seemingly different person entirely emerges based on the level of intake. I find it difficult to even have a normal conversation with people anymore, especially young people in their 20s. They either won’t shut up or they lack the ability to listen and comprehend; they’ll just stare at you and appear lost or will literally just walk away while you’re responding to something they have said. It’s amazing to watch. |

Many of these student are in college physician assisted program, doctorate or nurse practitioner. They are the cream of the crop. Not lazy and definitively smart. So. I am wondering if too much electronics are causing their brain to zone out. Just bringing it to your attention. Thanks for comments. |

It's not just young people, it's all people that are constantly engaged with the internet and social media. Concentration, attention, thinking and all mental labor requires energy just like physical labor. A large portion of the population regardless of age are spending many hours concentrating intently on their little screens scouring the net and social media. All those hours of rapt attention are tiring them out and by the time they get to your class they are already mentally exhausted which makes it hard for them to pay attention in class without feeling tired. There isn't much you can do about it because you can't control your students in the hours they are not in your class. I would like to say that lowering the temperature is shooting you in the foot, because i know I and many others actually feel more tired when we are cold, more so then hot. |

Burnout. 13 years of schools run like prisons. Forced extra-curriculars to look good for college. 8000 tests. The need to still hold a full time job while schooling. All the posturing on social media to look good for employers. Teachers who don't teach and assign their jobs as homework. Colleges micro-managing student's time. Forced indoctrination. I mean really, what could go wrong? |

Even while attending seminars where I reall want to learn something new. Maybe you can try different lighting or lamps? Teachers having to teach add or dyslexic students also have succes if they use a different color transparent sheet over the material being taught. |
