I saw on another thread that someone recommended essential oils. You have to be very careful with children and eo’s, even more so with infants. They can be deadly to him.

Someone was also talking about putting 4-8 nicotine patches on their children’s extremities. I hope they were joking. This could absolutely kill them.

Research the hell out of the subject before giving him anything.

Also, they make a snot sucker that is so much better than the bulb kind.
It’s called the Fridababy nasal aspirator. You should get that anyway. At some point they will get sick and that thing will get the snot out, but be warned...it’s disgusting for the parents.

This is what I wrote in the other thread.
I’ve got similar remedies- going out to double up on some supplies today.

Problem is I’ve got a 6 WEEK old at home and he can’t take any of this stuff. Any ideas on what to do with a newborn in this situation?

Put a few drops of tea tree oil on the inside of a mask (e.g. surgical mask or n95 mask) and put over baby's face when around people or out in public. Tea tree smells bad and it's annoying but it could help prevent/limit the risk of baby breathing in the virus. The air within the mask will smell like tea tree oil and when breathed in will have antiviral/disinfectant properties.

You have to be very careful with infants, even what they breathe in. Eo’s can be toxic and deadly to infants. You have to do your own research.

Here is an article about that...

Here is a list of eo’s that you should not use with children, broken down by age group...

I used to have a comprehensive list, but I cannot find it. If I do, I’ll post it.

The most important thing is that you extensively research anything that you are going to give to your baby, put on your baby, or even allow them to inhale BEFORE you give it to them.

Long time amateur prepper, first time dad here. My wife and I have been stocking supplies for years and have about 6 months of food, first aid and propane. We just our first son and are clueless on special preparations needed for them. ESP re: first aid. They can’t take a lot of the same stuff as we can. Any ideas?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78222738

6 months old? Kids good to go. If your wife breast feeds even better. Otherwise stock up on formula. Maybe baby food, or blend your own with canned veggies.

He's not really old enough to have to worry about choking or anything on toys.

Learning baby cpr wouldn't hurt. Have some cloth diapers ready.

This is all hypothetical, like if you did have to stay on for a few months.

Oh, if your wife doesn't breastfeed you need lots and lots of water. Which you already probably have but just get more.

Re: I have a newborn at home. What are preparations I can do specifically for children this young?
I’m in the same position, got a 5 month old daughter at home. Wife only works part time, we live on 11 acres, been a bit of a prepper my whole life, always a good idea to be prepared for catastrophes or unforeseen events that can destabilize the chain that keeps modern society going.

I’ve already got a decent freeze dried supply of food that will last us 3 months (if that was our only food source) House already has 5000w solar panels, doesn’t do much in winter but it supplies more then we use in the summer, keeps the well pump working and heats water. I bought a few packages of N95 masks, disposable gloves, Lysol spray disinfectant, elderberry gummies and syrup, a chest freezer for the garage and a vacuum sealer with a bunch of bags. All things I need and will help me out during this.

If it hits us hard here my wife will quit her job, I don’t interact much with people mostly all phone based so the main source of infection for us will be from family and friends and going out to eat, shop which is what we will minimize. I’ve got about 4 acres of cleared farm land so if it turns out that this is bad I will plant the entire field and get jars to can while vacuum sealing and freezing. We are also going to one of the grass fed butchers to get part of a cow, will vacuum seal the cuts and salt the rest and hang it up in the smoke house. Basically we will just try and ride it out with as little contact with people as we can while it is raging taking daily supplements Vit C, elderberry gummies, licorice and cinnamon which boost immune system against virus and close ace4 receptors making it a bit harder to catch.

If we get it we get it, we will just try our best to not let our little girl catch this. So we will probably stop having family visit until it ends, they can face time is if they want. If this is way doomier then just a 1918 type pandemic and it’s orders of magnitude worse then I will start hunting and smoking the deer here. I won’t even have to leave my front porch, there are dozens out every night.

Enough food to keep your wife producing milk. Keeps the kid fed, gets antibodies, stays healthy.

Oatmeal is key for milk production and is light. Cod liver are omega 3 nutrient bombs.

Have another one.

But seriously in true survival situation you have to save yourself first and others second. You can be of any use if you can function.

In a terrible situation you hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

PS I am sure your kid will be fine.

Best thing to do is get rid of all screens.

Your tv, your phone, etc. Limit computer till night and make sure child never sees it till much later.

Change your negative habits so that you become a good romodel.

Eat real food. Cook real food. Don't drink sugar drinks.

Breast feed as long as you can.

Be happy and positive and provide a loving environment.

My wife and I both took off work through the end of March, so we can minimize contact with the outside world. We still have the grandparents problem- they love spending time with the baby but one works and the other travels a lot- lots of contact in the outside world.

What should we do if he does catch this thing?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78222738

Catch this thing? Have you ever researched the flu that has been killing millions around the world for years before this recent flu in China?

You might want to pay attention....

So far, in the USA, 8,200 people have died and 140,000 people have been hospitalized during the 2019-2020 flu season, according to preliminary estimates from the CDC.

Breast feeding is the only way to boost the baby's immune system.

Keep washing your hands. Especially every time you enter your home after being out.

I cannot stress this enough... KNOW JESUS CHRIST! He will remove the children from this atrocity before His judgment falls. It is in scripture if you know where to look. Let HIM guide you! If you know Him and, more importantly, HE KNOWS YOU, You will be protected! Please HIS blood over your household and children! Read Psalm 91 Aloud. Dwell in HIS secret place (RELATIONSHIP), and no plague will come near your dwelling. Your dwelling is not your house but your flesh. There is no cure for this. HE, ALONE, Is your cure! Watch and wait...His time of signs and wonders is upon you. You want a fro t row seat? Let Him use you to be a vessel for others to come to Him. He will keep your little one. You have work to do. DO NOT STOP BREASTFEEDING. IF YOU HAVE TAPERED OFF, LET THE BABY CONTINUE TO NURSE AND MAYBE RESTIMULATE MILK PRODUCTION

ALL NEW MOMS: DO NOT LET VANITY DISSUADE YOU FROM GIVING YOUR INFANT SAFE SECURE SANITARY AND RELIABLE FOOD AT READY TEMPERATURE.

YOUR BREASTS WERE MADE TO PROVIDE MILK, THAT IS THEIR JOB, THEY WORK FOR BABY, NOBODY ELSE. MODERN LIFE LIES THAT YOUR TITS BELONG TO MEN TO OBJECTIFY OR DRESS THEM PROVOCATIVELY

THAT ENDS NOW

IF YOU WEAN, THEY COULD FACE STARVATION WITH NO FORMULA MADE OR DELIVERED IN TRUCKS. IF YOU ARE NURSING, THEN KEEP NURSING

Yep... First time parents. First child is protected at all cost. Second child not so much (The jitters are over). Third child is raised by the first child while the second child feels left out. Don't worry about what's going on in China. Live everyday at it fullest with your children. Wash your hand. Clean everything, boil your bottles. If the baby has a fever it may be baby teeth coming in or water getting in to the ears causing infection from bathing. Don't live in fear. Oh, one more thing! Congratulations to the both of you.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 20842745

Forget boiling bottles your baby should be getting milk straight from the source. Your baby will get antibodies from mothers milk. Where as formula the baby gets nothing but junk and high fructose corn syrup.
