Anonymous Coward User ID: 78515997 Denmark 02/24/2020 05:44 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The solar dynamics observatory experiences eclipses of the sun caused by the moon that are not visible from Earth. Because of its orbital motion, some of these events also exhibit behavior that you would never see from the ground. I developed a bot to predict all future SDO eclipses by monitoring the orbital elements of the spacecraft and looking a few months out for any transits of objects in front of the sun. My bot predicts that on February 23rd the sun watching spacecraft will see the moon turn and reverse course during a partial eclipse. Though this is not something you would ever see in a regular eclipse on Earth, it's completely normal and predictable based on the orbital elements of the spacecraft and the moon. Quoting: Astroshill Years ago I was accused of leaving a trap for GLP'ers by predicting the first of these types of eclipses without making a big deal out of it, leading to a lot of people embarrassing themselves when they freaked out about it. Well now you can't say I didn't warn you, so when this happens next month don't blame me for your own mistakes. Also coming up in a few days, SDO will enter its next eclipse season where the Earth will block the sun for a period of time each day for several weeks. The full eclipse season is now predicted and shown on my Annotated SDO channel on YouTube. Haha! The moon will reverse course!! You heard it here first! Moon reversing course... "Years ago I was accused of leaving a trap for GLP'ers by predicting the first of these types of eclipses without making a big deal out of it, leading to a lot of people embarrassing themselves when they freaked out about it." There is SOOO much information to unpack in the facts behind this statement. Example - the direct comparison to occurrences of similar, albeit intentional, sway held by court priests and astrologers over the populous centuries ago. Amazing to see that, apparently, such power could still be wielded even in our current era of near-instantaneous global information access. Information such as one might access to quell any concerns over hitherto unknown lunar motion. Does this speak to the mind of the individual or group? Something for me to mull... ChayOphan |

Quoting: Éireann I have never heard of it doing that until this thread. Thanks, Astro! Yup, it's due to the orbital motion of SDO. You would never see it look like this from Earth's surface. Your post makes a wrong impression to the astro illiterates who may not know what SDO is. Of course SDO or any other Space Observatories could experience moon's retrograde due to their orbital speed. But as long as moon rotates around the earth, no way observers on the surface of the earth will see any retrograde, unless the moon really move back suddenly. I make it perfectly clear what SDO is. You're done on my threads. |

Would an 8" ground based telescope actually blow the Hubble away when it comes to the moon? Your P900 cannot attain this level of angular resolution of the moon. [link to www.nasa.gov (secure)] |

Not going to happen. The moon is very gradually accelerating away from Earth under tidal acceleration. Any event energetic enough to knock the moon into Earth within a minute (about 2% of light speed) would not leave the moon intact, to say the least, and the nature of such an event would probably vaporize a good portion of the moon. The total binding energy of the moon is about 1.2*10^29 joules. The kinetic energy needed to accelerate the moon to 2% the speed of light would be about 1.47 * 10^36 joules. So in other words, more than 10 million times the energy needed to completely destroy the moon like it got hit by a blast from a death star in star wars. In fact whatever hit or caused that to happen would probably come straight through the moon and destroy Earth before the moon even reached Earth. |
