I have never heard of it doing that until this thread. Thanks, Astro! Eireann~ I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. - Galatians 2:20 |

User ID: 78112650 United States 01/30/2020 08:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The solar dynamics observatory experiences eclipses of the sun caused by the moon that are not visible from Earth. Because of its orbital motion, some of these events also exhibit behavior that you would never see from the ground. I developed a bot to predict all future SDO eclipses by monitoring the orbital elements of the spacecraft and looking a few months out for any transits of objects in front of the sun. My bot predicts that on February 23rd the sun watching spacecraft will see the moon turn and reverse course during a partial eclipse. Though this is not something you would ever see in a regular eclipse on Earth, it's completely normal and predictable based on the orbital elements of the spacecraft and the moon. Quoting: Astroshill Years ago I was accused of leaving a trap for GLP'ers by predicting the first of these types of eclipses without making a big deal out of it, leading to a lot of people embarrassing themselves when they freaked out about it. Well now you can't say I didn't warn you, so when this happens next month don't blame me for your own mistakes. Also coming up in a few days, SDO will enter its next eclipse season where the Earth will block the sun for a period of time each day for several weeks. The full eclipse season is now predicted and shown on my Annotated SDO channel on YouTube. Such a deceptively titled thread. It clearly implies that the moon will do something unusual, and that it will be visible from earth. No wonder you're being accused of leaving a trap. This is terrible communication at best, and deliberate deception at worst. From many, covfefe |

(OP) Senior Forum Moderator 01/30/2020 08:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If it's BS then it's going to be awfully embarrassing for me on February 23rd when nothing happens and my bot annotates the images of the sun from SDO that day with this eclipse shown but it didn't actually happen. You see, I programmed my bot to also annotate the daily images from the spacecraft based on its predictions of any transits that should have happened over the sun. It successfully did this before with an eclipse like this. |

Nevertheless, I guarantee you somebody will notice because people look at images from SDO every day. Leaving a trap would be deliberately not mentioning my prediction but leaving the video up there with an uploaded date before the eclipse occurred so that I could show proof that I had predicted it before it happened but not tell anyone so that they make fools of themselves next month. There's no deception here. I made it very clear what this is about and what is causing it in my opening post. If you don't read the thread then that's your fault. |

Bad communication that was technically accurate destroyed Columbia, because it conveyed the wrong overall message and led to bad decisions being made. But I'd be amazed if even 1 in 10,000 people regularly looked at SDO images, and if 1 in 100 of those would even notice something like this. Everyone in normal life by default assumes that observations are made from the surface of the earth. If that's not the case, you have a duty to specify in the main title - not buried in the middle of a paragraph. Just honest feedback. Take that how you will - even if it's with a hissy fit.
