Hi, will watch that thanks.

Some people were asking for your take on this vid of the moon and 'craft', if you haven't seen it and care to give your two cents?

It looks like Comet ATLAS is disintegrating. No, this doesn't threaten earth in any way, I predicted this might happen. I even said it was the most likely outcome on Francis Walsh's podcast a couple nights ago. And now it looks like I was right:
[link to www.astronomerstelegram.org]
So tonight at 10pm eastern, 2:00 UT, I'll stream comet ATLAS as it starts to fade and disintegrate:

Any way to predict when Earth will fly through that debris?
And.. will we get a New meteor shower from this?
 Quoting: BBQ BOY™

Earth will not be flying through the debris and we will not be getting a meteor shower from this comet. people have pointed out that other comments have given us meteor showers like Halley's comet and Biela, but both of those comets had very low minimum orbit intersect distances, less than a 10th of astronomical unit. This comet's MOID is more than half the distance to the sun.

Well, I did. I said there was a better than not chance of it disintegrating just a couple nights ago on collision course with Francis Walsh. That's the same guy who filmed the video you guys were sharing around claiming to show a second object moving next to the comet. Go ask him yourself if you don't believe me. I told him straight up on his podcast that I thought there was a better than 50% chance it would disintegrate.

Re: Comet ATLAS Disintegration Live Stream! *Live Again Tonight!
This comet has been doing this orbit around the sun for how long?
Why this time around it dissolves, and not any of the hundreds of orbits before. Just co-incidence?
 Quoting: oneZeno 33759523

As I discussed in this video, the fact the orbit so very closely aligns with the great comet of 1844 suggests to me that they were in one piece not that long ago in astronomical terms.
[link to youtu.be (secure)]
Maybe as recently as one orbit prior to 1844, ATLAS may have fragmented off of the larger piece that was the great comet of 1844. That would make this the first orbit this particular fragment experienced on its own, and it appears it won't survive the trip. The 1844 comet was probably a much larger remnant of the original intact comet.
 Quoting: Astromut

So the great comet of 1844 has an orbital period of 600-800 years
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78689367

No. The orbital period of a highly elliptical comet is variable and hard to nail down precisely, particularly from astrometry that isn't extremely accurate. Tiny variations in the eccentricity result in large deviations in the orbital period. JPL's HORIZONS system lists the current orbital period of that comet as being about 3,800 years.

 Quoting: Astromut

Thanks for the reply. I see what happened on my end. Googled 1844 comet but got 1843 comet.

DOOM still on?

Maybe it will outgas all the cyanide till it hits the methane core and explode?

Then, because of its shaped-charge configuration, it will spew its Earth shattering contents directly at us?

Well it hasnt disentegrated yet though.

Astro is predicting it will.

Also really no way to prove what astro really is showing on his livestream.

wrong. No faith is required. You can check the astrometry for yourself and verify that I'm pointed at the right coordinates. You are trying to undermine my credibility and sow the seeds of doubt. You don't even want people trusting that I'm showing them the correct comet. Anyone else want a ban from my threads? Let's weed you out now before I'm busy doing the webcast tonight.

Astro, this comet is near Mars right now? ISON did the same thing. It dimmed out by Mars and then brightened up again as it moved away from Mars. This may not be Comet death.
 Quoting: Treva

No, ISON disintegrated at perihelion. It experienced a temporary outburst late in the game, that's not uncommon. This isn't that, observatories have begun reporting an elongation of the nucleus. That's a tell-tale sign of the nucleus coming apart.
 Quoting: Astromut

Ok thanks. Just catching up. Too much to watch rn. I hope it recovers. Thanks for the videos!!!

I hope it defies the odds as well, but I think that's very unlikely. I want to be very clear because some people last night were trying to misconstrue my position as if I was hyping up the comet and saying that it would definitely hold together, when in reality I said nothing of the sort.

 Quoting: LHPaul

No. I had a 5" scope on it the other night and didn't see shit. Even my 8" would probably not fare any better. I am going to try and image it with my 360mm scope later this week if weather permits.

If that's the case then it's dimmed even from my previous observations of it. That's disappointing. This could very well be my final livestream of the comet.

Bummer, was hoping for a good show. I have 3 boys - ages 16, 13 and 9, and am having to home school them right now. I've used your videos on this comet to help them learn about it. basically learning about comets in general, but was using this one as an example. (I commented on a previous live stream about doing that during home schooling). My 13 year old is especially interested. So THANK YOU for the work you do.
