...

that does seem a little strange
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78562076

Like I said during one of my previous live streams, the comet is only sublimating and outgassing when it approaches the sun and warms up. Thanks to Kepler's third law it spends most of its orbit in deep freeze far from the sun and only a very short period near the sun when we are observing it.
 Quoting: Astromut

Would the fragments not held together by ice any longer maintain an orbit with the group or will they just drift apart and spread as it travels.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78761113

The ice is sublimating and if the comet's disintegrating that means it's not got enough ice left to be held together. It's coming apart and spreading out along the orbit.
 Quoting: Astromut

it's just a problem of tail, the comet is still here
 Quoting: gir.ki

There is no "problem." The tail isn't dangerous and isn't going to point our way anyway.
 Quoting: Astromut

Astro has been here A Long time, so have I....and I will say that
through all the 2012 and before...and after...... He has Always been Right!

Thank you Deplorable Dr. Astro for keeping GLP on level ground, when it concerns observable astrological phenomena.
Looking forward to the stream.

There is another theory mentioned, which states that this has already happened.

It looks like Comet ATLAS is disintegrating. No, this doesn't threaten earth in any way, I predicted this might happen. I even said it was the most likely outcome on Francis Walsh's podcast a couple nights ago. And now it looks like I was right:

So tonight at 10pm eastern, 2:00 UT, I'll stream comet ATLAS as it starts to fade and disintegrate:

*Make that 9 pm eastern, 1:00 UT. Setup is going smoothly and I want to see if I can squeeze in a view of asteroid 1998 OR2.

yea i know he said "no this will not threaten earth" but correct me if im wrong doesnt that mean that there will be little pieces flying off chaotically in different trajectories?

i mean comon man how is that not a threat?

hopefully im wrong but i wont be surprised if we have another similiar russian Chelyabinsk meteor event

... No, this doesn't threaten earth in any way...
 Quoting: Astromut

How do you know that for certain?

Have you identified pieces of the comet and their path?

Thank you in advance.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78745975

There's no way he could identify any part of the comet except for the light it emits.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77848945

I've tracked the comet myself, the debris will spread out along the orbit. There's not enough Delta v from disintegration to send chunks into Earth.
 Quoting: Astromut

10-4.

Thank you for the quick response.

A simple question Doc, are you ever wrong?
 Quoting: Uriel 78344372

I was wrong to assume most of my livestream views were coming from GLP. Turns out they're mostly coming from a Facebook page. I'm not even posting it on there so I don't know where that's coming from. I think GLP's interest in this comet has waned. Probably too burned out by Elenin and ISON still.
 Quoting: Astromut

Funny, cause Elenin was how I found GLP and Francis. Youre probably right though..

No friction in space. How does it heat up and break apart?
Furthermore, space is very cold. Where dors the heat come from to tear the Comet apart?

I mean attacking him does jack and shit for the community. He takes his time to put live footage up for you or anyone else who would like to view it. He even is so kind to give you exact telemetry and coordinates, when in reality, why the fuck should he? He does your homework so you can sit on the internet and talk shit.

Great contribution ya fuck wit.
