They are only a threat if the high heat also contains high humidity. Otherwise this is just more of a high desert heat. Do you hear the Middle Eastern Muslims complaining that it is hot every day? You are so stupid. High heat means no humidity which means increased fire risk. Exactly. High humidity would be worse for the elderly - if all we were talking about was the impact heat has on our bodies. In SoCal, the heat is a problem more because of extreme fire danger + illnesses from smoke inhalation. Massive amounts of dead brush is everywhere. It's not like the middle east or Arizona, where plants never have much of a chance to grow in the first place. |

I have lived through 110+F Summer days where the humidity was over 80%. This was years ago though. Such moderate to high humidity days in the Summer is fairly normal for those of us here in North Texas. Now enjoy being put in your lowly place, AC. As for you, FivelCubed, such smoke in the air would not be bad just for the elderly, but everyone else in the affected area(s) as well. It was rising up in the morning, but now it is dropping. We are holed up in our house. It was supposed to be 108 here today, but the smoke has created a huge cover so it's not so hot. |

Quoting: Digital mix guy Forecasters had predicted historic high temperatures, and they were proved right. Dozens of communities set records Saturday, and a few appeared to record all-time highs, according to the National Weather Service. In Woodland Hills, the mercury climbed to 117 degrees by 3 p.m., making it the hottest day ever recorded there in September, breaking the record of 115 set in 1979. Burbank reached 113, tying its monthly record set in 1971. Van Nuys hit 115. The mercury soared even higher to the east, with Palm Springs hitting 122 and Indio 121. Officials said at least three areas tied or topped all-time record highs: Alpine (113), El Cajon (114) and Idyllwild (103). Just because it’s hot in LA in the summer doesn't mean the whole globe is getting warmer. Also, both arctic and antarctic are adding lots of ice and snow pack this year. [link to www.latimes.com (secure)] It's hard to describe the shade of the sky in the central valley, south of Fresno right now. It's been this way for a few days. There's a yellow-reddish haze everywhere--like we're on Mars, but with plants. It's hard to breathe. There's ash all over the plants, cars, concrete...everything. I feel like the plants must be choking with all this debris on their leaves, blocking the sunlight. But I'm afraid of washing it off with a hose for fear of making a muddy substance that would be even harder to remove. We are inside with the AC on and thanking God we don't have to go out in this and that we have electricity right now. It's insane, the smoke. It's exhausting. I feel like shit. We're being pecked to death by a duck. |
