Told the kids to do the same - play Santa early or Santa may not come. The little ones have had so many disappointments this year - make sure you get a few things for Christmas put away early. I also have picked some up of the things I’ll need to make Christmas cookies and such. Plan for upcoming birthdays and holidays now. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76788160 ^ This is why I love GLP! Thinking of others even in disaster!! I did the same! Think we're all prepped, but get Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner NOW. Also did the same and got grandkids Christmas presents and others as well. Do it now or none of it will happen at all. All my kids are getting for Christmas is level 3 body armor a new 308 AR10 and a few thousand $ in reloading equip and supply's. My sons Spartan armor 3 hard plate already got it, 30 days. My lovely wife got a Tavor 7 bullpup with a sig red dot and sig4x flip up magnifier a 1000 rounds and 10 30 round mags and a partridge in a pair tree! |

You have got to be ready for mice and maybe rats. Rats can chew through thin plastic bins. The ONLY safe place is a galvanized trash can or equivalent. I do have some big white thicker plastic buckets with beans and grain from Emergency Essentials so I hope those are OK. But a lot of your preps can be at big risk. And oh yes- mouse traps and more mouse traps. Rat poison, anything critter related. Great thread OP. |

Books on medical procedures when there is no doctor. Books on pest control and natural sustainable livestock management. Hunting and fishing and living when there are no groceries. Firearms use and blacksmithing/maintenance. Improvised munitions and booby traps. All good ideas. 20 years ago I purchased books on how to live off of the land if civilization were to fully crumble or be disrupted by whatever forces. Which local foods were eatible, how to start a fire without matches, how to build a shelter without tools or lumber, how to hunt, trap, and kill wild animals in order to just stay alive, home remedies for injuries and sickness, etc. |

I bought a little travel sewing kit, but it won't do much. Amazon has upholstery kits, and also a sail repair kit would work for most anything (they have a curved needle as well as a leather palm thing that protects your hands). I thought of a few more things for ladies: Supplies for your ladies days, good sports bras, hair ties / ponytail holders, hair clips, etc. I was down to my last hair clip, and they break so easily. For everyone: Ball caps, good sunglasses, and backup prescription glasses, reading glasses, and/or contacts. Quoting: wait....what? We might be depending on it to keep us warm and maybe cook. :barbq: And maybe some extra propane. This is my biggest worry right now. We can't install a wood stove while we are paying on the house, so we don't have a secondary source of heat. Thinking about trying to find some kerosene heaters or something. Have heated with kero for decades. The best type of kerosene heaters (because they are safest and use the least fuel) are these types: [link to www.lowes.com (secure)] These put out around 10,000 btu’s, enough to heat a couple of fair-sized rooms. The big round ones put out more heat (around 22,000 btu’s), but use twice the fuel. The smaller unit linked uses about one gallon of kerosene per day. Also, they throw no heat from the back and sides, so can fit more easily in a room. You need to use K-1 clear, or “water-white” kerosene, NOT the stuff with red dye - that will clog the heater’s wick in short order. Kerosene is combustible, like diesel fuel, not flammable like gasoline, so it’s relatively safe to store. Most bulk fuel suppliers can get you a drum of the stuff - 30 or 55 gallon - or you can just get a few of the blue 5-gallon containers (do NOT ever use old gas cans, as even a little gas in kero can cause an explosion in a heater), depending on the level of prep you’re looking for. Hope this helps. |

We’ve also got a spare wick for it. Great post. Thanks! I should add that kerosene, if kept away from light and heat and well-sealed, can last decades. It might need to be filtered a bit if it’s that old, but I’ve used 30+ y.o. kero with no problems. One thing that is death to a kero heater’s wick is water. You have to make absolutely certain that there’s no water in your kero (it can get into it simply from condensation inside a partially-filled container). Best thing to prevent this is a product called “Mr. Funnel”. It’s a funnel with a built in Teflon-coated filter that removes water and debris from fuel: [link to www.mrfunnel.com] Have used a pair of these funnels for years, and they are the “bee’s knees”. Just be sure, if you use it to filter gasoline, that it is absolutely free of gas before you filter kero with it! Gas in kero, even a little, can lead to explosion and fire in a heater or other appliance, like a kero lamp. I have one funnel that I spray-painted blue and the other red so as to avoid problems. |
