Re: SpaceX Starship High Altitude Test Flight
Well to my shock I guess it was designed to do that sort of. The flip looked good right until it didn't stop in time. Looks like the engine startup sequence on the landing burn was not as clean as it needed to be

Yeah, I 'm sure they learned a ton, and the next one will be a success! it was cool.

Progressive loss of engines. I'm thinking this thing's going to hit the ground flat. Or maybe the water.
 Quoting: Astromut

was that planned? they all fired right back up for landing burn...

Btw that landing explosion was rad. Looks like it did everything well right up until then.

amazing RUD! looks like the landing burn started just a few seconds too late... i'd call it 90% successful.

It was meant to explode when its arse hit the ground?

It appeared to be a successful test to me.

They will apply the data to SN9 on the next test.

It appeared 2 of the 3 raptors ignited and simply came down way too fast.
Just have to initiate the sequence a bit sooner.
DOOM is what you make of it.

after watching the replay a couple of times... agreed re 1 raptor not igniting on landing burn, which explains the RUD.

regardless, pretty fucking cool.

Actually it hit the ground vertically. If you read my posts I made it clear I didn't expect this to be a successful landing.

Yes Sir, all due to lack of Pressure. Great Thread, as always.

I hear people saying it was from engine burning it self up a bit from low header tank pressure (a little copper in metal of engine, copper burns green). But Im no expert at all

Normally with a Merlin engine that would just be from TEA-TEB at engine startup to ignite the engine. But they were getting away from that with Raptor. These engines are supposed to rely on spark ignition instead of TEA-TEB. Is there still some TEA-TEB system as a backup if the engine isn't starting properly from the sparkers? I don't know. It could also be some part of the engine burning up because of the low header tank pressure. I believe these engines are regeneratively cooled, so if they're not getting enough fuel into the lines then the combustion will overheat the engine.

The progressive shutdown of the engines was not supposed to happen?
 Quoting: Katipo2017

Actually it seems like that was the design all along, I didn't hear anything about that before the launch though so it took me by surprised when it happened.

That first engine shutdown looked like a malfunction at first. The second one was a lot smoother, which made me think that the first one must have been deliberate as well.

Copper salts burn blue, barium burns green, at least for solid rocket fuel. I’m NAR certified high powered rocketry level 2. I do not make my own rocket fuel, my house is paid for.

The burning ‘pure’ metals I’ve seen burn bright as hell. It’s hard to see color.

I had a thought it might be coolant. I’ve seen fires of racing cars and sometimes there is a green color.

And again, a mathematical simulation (physic based) is NOT the same as a demonstrable, reproducible, and verifiable experiment.
 Quoting: JD 68934211

Wrong. It is an in silico experiment, it is reproducible and verifiable. You have completely failed to demonstrate any place where the simulation is false.
