The one women said it took firefighters 45 minutes to stop the water from coming into her apartment. It might have been more complicated in an apartment building/complex than turning the water off in one's house. when there is a busted pipe, you RUN to the main water shut off and turn off ALL the water to everything, DERP |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 2272340 United States 02/17/2021 05:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The bottom line The Texans didn't plan for such things. But, homeowners, building engineers, landlords should ALL know how to shut off water mains, or tell others where the valves are. And VERY rarely is it a valve that can't be closed by the average dope....even chemtards and flat earthers! |

Quoting: nutmeg Q. Where can I find master water shut off valve in a Condominium Apartment? A. I’ve worked on many apartments in many different apartment type units. Many complexes are built with only a single water cutoff for the entire apartment building. There is one shutoff in a common mechanical room somewhere for all apartments in that building unit. I’ve run into a few where you have to shut off the water at the street, where the meter is. [link to www.quora.com (secure)] And you probably need a big freaking wrench to shut it off at the street and the water departments permission! I'm a very lucky woman who has a great husband who isn't afraid of dirt or work. He crawled under our house several years ago and put in additional shut off valves in case we had an issue with the outside hose faucet or the washing machine or the extra bathroom. The main line doesn't have to be shut off if the issue is further down the line. He's one of those rare "jack of all trades" type of guy. Did just about everything himself from plumbing to wiring to changing a deck on a lawnmower. Saved us thousands in repairs bills over the years. Doesn't have the patience to make things look pretty though, so I keep him away from anything that involves "looks", lol. lol When we moved into our house many years ago, a leak occured in one of the bathrooms upstairs. It was obviously from one of the tubs and leaked down through the kitchen ceiling. My husband was also good at fixing things, so he cut a hole in the ceiling and fixed the leak. About 6-8 months later, I asked why he hadn't repaired the hole in the kitchen ceiling. It was an eyesore. He said, "I fixed the leak. What else do you want?" Yep, drywall is one thing my husband hasn't taken finishing lessons in! |

They also had to FIND the valves in the piles of hoarded crap! Then, they had to figure out "righty tighty - lefty loosey! It shouldn't be the job of the firefighter to stop domestic water flooding, anyway. |

Be careful of these people, they are dangerous. A broken water pipe is basically the opposite of a fire, so yeah call the fire department. |

Quoting: PREZ-ELECT wisconsin . ... no ... we aren't all as smart as you or live in a separate house ... . Then person responsible for the apartment building or Hotel should have enough sense to shut the damn water off. My thought exactly! I live in the north east of Canada, I understand that infrastructure is not the same. But I have to admit I'm surprised to see these pipe burst everywhere, specially in those hotels... Ever in your life buy seeds or a plant that goes outdoors? Notice that little thing on the package or tag that looks like a map with climate zones??? Do you Yankee people have any idea what so ever what some of these climate zones are like below your latitude. Do you honestly think construction could pass code and we do have codes, if it was built wildly out of code for the zone? This is now day 3-4 for some of these people in a deep freeze in an area totally not prepared or conditioned for this kind of weather. How hard is this for people to understand? Thread after thread after thread full of replies - do you live in a CAT 5 rated Hurricane structure, or let me go more light on you do you live in a CAT 3 rated domicile? Why not??? Maybe because you live where they never have CAT 3s - see where I am going with this??? What's this have to do with having enough sense to shut the damn water off if your pipe just burst in your house? It doesn't so spare me this crap that's ok to stand around like an idiot and video it for Tik-Tok rather than shutting off the water so more of it doesn't flood your home then it already is. It is quite clear some people haven't a clue what to do in the case of a burst pipe and that has nothing to do with climate either. |

It might have been more complicated in an apartment building/complex than turning the water off in one's house. Property tax is high, but it's not justified to dwell in an apartment in state like Texas. Land price is cheap enough that if you're not lazy, and a dreamer, with practical skill, realistic mindset and work ethnic, you can make use of the land for gardening, to trade off the property tax. Some backyard chicken, gardening for organic veggie, herb... Living in apartment while lacking all sense of survival. It smells like a liberal. |

As I said above, it took firefighters 45 minutes to stop the flow of water in one apartment complex. Next you'll say that firefighters are clueless. Why is it that some people here are so hateful with blame instead of being compasionate to others who are in a bad situation? I agree. Theres a lot of useless hate going round. Same troll crap. |

Then person responsible for the apartment building or Hotel should have enough sense to shut the damn water off. My son just had the pipes bust in his laundry room last night. He couldn’t access the shut off & maintenance was so inundated with problems that they couldn’t do it. He called the fire department & they couldn’t respond because they were overwhelmed with other more serious issues. (Including the apartment complex next door to his that was on fire.) He had to let it run all night. |

User ID: 80059248 United States 02/17/2021 06:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If any Texans are reading here, you need to drip your faucets when the temperatures are very low to prevent pipes bursting. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80061203 I am not sure if Texans know this (since their winters are always so mild) so I just wanted to say it in case they arent aware of this tip. I dripped all mine and one still froze. My son woke me up at 6 and said come look mom. I sent him out to the main shutoff with a tool to shut it off. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 76695796 United States 02/17/2021 06:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | When a pipe goes, just run over and turn off the water. Mop up, put up desiccants in the area and setup fans. If you have carpeting, pull it up. If tile or wood flooring then just keep mopping with dry towels until dry. Keep desiccants up along with fans for two days, especially nearby walls that were wet. Situation resolved. You might have to rip carpeting out and put in new if you end up with mold. |

But that means they turn off the water to the entire apartment building. That's why I smell like shit, because I can't wash my hands with no water after taking a shit. The mexican maintenance in Plano and The Colony are incompetent and don't ever fix anything, leading to more serious problems down the line. |
