On Wednesday night, the eve before her death on February 4th 2021, Ariella Sage Eloise Crawford (commonly known in the local community as Sage Crawford, birth name Deidre Hawkins) confided in numerous sources that she was being harassed by law enforcement and that she was concerned for the safety of her two daughters, 4 and 6 years old, specifically because of a possible incident that occurred at a local shelter, though no reports exist to substantiate or discredit this claim. Sources who were in contact with her the days leading up to her death described her as terrified, but not erratic. Sage was from Southern California originally, with family in Oregon, but had been in the Nevada County area since last year.

“I put forth all the effort into changing for the better, because that’s what my children deserve.” Sage Crawford wrote these words years ago, but had continued to show through action that she meant them since losing the father of her children, Isaiah Crawford, in a tragic motorcycle accident on May 30th 2017 while she was pregnant with their youngest daughter.

On Thursday, February 4th, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) was dispatched to a call in the community of Alta Sierra for a young woman walking down the shoulder of the road in the afternoon holding each of her daughter’s hands, the report stating that she seemed intoxicated and was walking in the middle of the road. Sage, also known by her birth name Deidre Hawkins, seemed familiar with the neighborhood and had knocked on a resident’s door to ask for jackets for her children as well as a ride to the neighboring state of Nevada for undisclosed reasons. The dispatch call at 1:14pm mentioned a female needing a ride to Nevada City, saying that her children were in danger. Ten minutes later, officers arrive on the scene and within minutes a taser had deployed unsuccessfully, followed by gun shots. Sage reportedly showed law enforcement a knife she carried for protection as she yelled “You are not going to take my children away.”

Though dash cam footage has still not been released as definitive proof of what occurred in the tragic death of Sage Crawford, according to eye-witness reports, she was standing behind her children when she was shot. Deputies approached her, the situation escalating in volume and intensity quickly, shots were fired within minutes of law enforcement’s arrival. With the knife in view in her hand, one officer deployed their taser but it was unsuccessful in subduing the woman who stood at roughly 5’2”. The other deputy unloaded two shots from his fire arm, followed quickly by three more shots. It has not yet been made available to the public which of these two officers used the firearm. Both officers, each with 4 years service to Nevada County, have been placed on administrative leave, per department protocol. At least two shots were said to have hit Sage, one in each shoulder, though an official coroner’s report has yet to be released to either the family or the public. Community members who were familiar with Sage describe her as a private, mild mannered young woman who was a mother before anything else. The scene, including the blackberry bushes where her body fell, was quickly barricaded and secured, closing the small residential neighborhood to any traffic coming in or out. There is no evidence of blood on the pavement, the pine-needles lie on the road undisturbed. Sage’s daughters were immediately taken into CPS custody as their mother was transported to a hospital where she was pronounced dead by 4pm. *

The daughters have since been reunited with biological extended family and are physically safe in a judicially granted guardianship. Both the Hawkins and Crawford family have joined together to find out the truth about what happened on 2/4/21 and the days leading up to her death, but also with a focus on giving the children all that they need during this difficult time.

It’s a shame the kids will live with the experience of watching their mother get shot and killed.

On the other hand, the woman was obviously mentally deranged, so the kids are spared from living a life with a psychopath.

This woman is responsible for the outcome of this situation. She started screaming paranoid crazy shit. She screamed "Allahu Akbar". She threatened police officers with a knife IN FRONT OF HER CHILDREN. She charged a police officer with a knife and threatened to kill him.

They tried to talk politely and calmly. They tried to back down. They tried to taze her. After the officer shot her, they tried diligently to keep her alive and probably would have been successful if she would have dropped the knife sooner after she was on the ground and shot.

I speak as a person with 8.5 years in mental health, 2.5 years of which was spent as a crisis worker dealing with pscyhotic, suicidal, and homicidal patients. She is severely mentally ill. I can almost guarantee that CPS (or DCFS) was well aware of her mental state and had come to the conclusion she was not currently fit to care for her children.

So she deserved to be shot and killed because she didn't trust the authorities and loved her children? The day that 2 strapping male LEOs can't disarm and restrain a hysterical woman with a pocketkife is the day our culture is fucked.

You don't see? The taser straight up didn't work unless the cop intentionally deployed it wrong but it looks like it doesn't even affect her. I guess I wonder why no other cop had a taser but once the one tried because she was approaching the cop speaking (with her knife) she chased the taser one down (still with her knife).

Before I watched the video, and I still haven't finished it, I had so much sympathy but this woman is demonstrating some of the most aggressive, deranged behavior that seems due to either addiction or mental illness. I agree no child should have to witness this, lose both of their parents, and be put in these situations but the mother brought it upon everyone.

I don't know any back story besides what is here that the neighbors have said, I don't know how badly the cops had been harassing her and what she had or had not done to deserve the harassment she claims. No one deserves to be shot because they are addicted or mentally ill but when ANYONE brandishes a weapon and runs at law enforcement, fight or flight takes over for everyone and reactions are in the moment.

I hope those kids are in safer hands with other family members.

Maybe they should have used a tranquilizer or a net on that woman.

3 well-trained cops should have been able to subdue and arrest that woman.

and people will say the cops had no choice but to kill her. They could have gone away until things calmed down a bit. They could have used the stun-gun until she was out.
