According to research firm Moody's Analytics, about 12 million renters owe an average of almost $6,000, which includes past due rent, late fees, and unpaid utility bills. In total, some $72 billion is owed.

"These are low-income households," said Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody's Analytics. "They've probably already borrowed as much as they can from family or friends. They have no resources left."

In New York City alone, tenants owe a whopping $2 billion in back rents.

The topic is landlords getting fucked by lessees who made bad choices. Most of those landlords are not rich.

The couple of folks I know who are landlords either work regular jobs or are on disability/social security and have like one home that they inherited they rent out to supplement their meager incomes. They have property taxes to pay and upkeep for all the damage the renters cause but no income from them. They might end up having to sell the house to get rid of the headaches and then what do the renters do then? Or is that "allowed" now?

You pay taxes on the house you thought you owned. If you pay tax on a house you live in you are just a tenant to banker .gov...

There is this very powerful capability which humans have. It is called choice. Based on some of the fuckwit posts in this thread, quite a few of you do not understand the concept of choice.

These people chose to rent properties which do not belong to them. They chose to settle for low paying jobs or go on the dole. They chose to live in cities where they do not have the ability to grow food. They chose to put their money towards luxuries like cell phones, internet, television, automobiles. Chose to have more children than they can afford. CHOSE tse things for themselves and for their families.

I will allow that I am generalizing. Not everyone has a choice. Some people are disabled and are fortunate to even be alive. In the past they would have died because systems to support them and their disabilities were not in place.

Maybe I feel this way because I was abused as a child. Maybe because I have been homeless more than once in my life. Maybe because I provide assistance to homeless people, or because I grew up in the caribbean where human beings starve to death if they don't figure out a hustle and learn it well. Maybe because I made BAD FUCKING CHOICES many times when I was younger. I have been priviliged enough to have survived making those bad fucking choices. I've lived in cities and I have lived in rented apartments. That shit sucked so I moved to the country and worked out a fair scenario where I can live with family and contribute. I choose not to take vacations because they are fucking expensive. I choose not to buy expensive foods or eat out. I choose to be in a location where I can grow much of my own food and trade for much of what I need that I do not already have.

The lessors are now stuck with a bunch of lessees who made poor choices. The lessors have properties and are not being compensated for the usage of those properties. That is fucked up. Being American doesn't mean being an entitled shit. Being American used to mean something. Now it's treated like a bad word, and it should be. A lot of Americans have made bad fucking choices and are too busy distributing blame and projecting to accept responsibility for their bad choices.

Millions of women and manchildren need to grow the fuck up and adopt personal accountability, but they won't, and this nation will continue its descent into a third world dumpster fire.
