Shhhhhh. I have been thankful for only needing a smidge of heat in the morning!

Yep. I just ordered a 12v blanket in case the power goes out. I can run it on a Jackery. I also just learned about the Buddy propane space heater.....you can use it indoors. Good for us apartment dwellers.

Keep taking baby steps forward.....they do add up. :)

CC, how did they turn out? I remember the last attempt didn't work out so well.

They gave us a new stove/oven when we moved in.....totally wasted on me, but it's beautiful. I have only used the stove top so far. I turned on the oven a few nights ago to take the chill off.....I know you aren't supposed to do that with a gas oven, but I was going to be careful.

Well, it caught on fire! Apparently there was still some factory plastic material in the oven door that melted, and smoke was everywhere. Luckily, it didn't set off the smoke alarms or sprinklers.

It seems I am not cut out for using ovens in any capacity. LOL.

never had an issue with using a gas stove to keep warm. course we didn't leave packing materials in them.

does it have a safety cutoff? most new 1's do/ won't light without electricity so is worthless in a grid down situation. can't light it by hand as they shut off the gas feed.

Regardless, my stove/oven and clothes dryer are gas, so I agree that CO detectors are very important!

I'm not convinced by our "experts"

Timelapse maps reveal how '15% more infectious' Delta offshoot 'Nu' has rapidly spread across England since it was first detected in London and the South East in June - but experts insist it is NOTHING to worry about

[link to www.dailymail.co.uk (secure)]
 Quoting: Leaver

At this point variants that do not evade vaccine induced immunity are of little concern. So unless there is significant evidence to show a increased Hospitalization (and then)-> ICU rate for any new variant among the vaccinated group there is no long term worries. Main problem we seem to be seeing now is that there is significant spread without detectable infection among the vaccinated group, long term problem here is the still elusive long covid effects that may/may not hit this group.

turn the breaker off or unplug stove to check it. or lift the top and see what u have for pilot lights. i bet it is electric light not a flame like we used to have.

i think most ppl have no clue that without electricity their furnaces won't work. they have tanks for propane or gas lines hooked up. they don't even think bout the thermostat needing power.

my biggest worry here is bout FEB they will kill the power. millions will die due to no heat.they'll go to sleep and not wake up.

You can always go for a stove without a plug, if they do have one however it's worth checking the power draw. If you know what you're doing and it really is only reading/reacting to sensors you should be able to mod it to run of a 5v battery (3x AA in Series).

Propane tanks should be lootable at that point. But you're point is very valid, Gas Generators are what we tend to use for peak power demand (Quick spin up and shut down for fossil fuel), so in a complete power failure it's not something to rely on unless you know a local source.

Looks like a good source to read and not do the stupid things that can make things dangerous. As a general rule of thumb don't burn things for warmth in a completely closed space. Entropy will reward you for understanding it.

i did hear something that will add to the localized shortages ppl are seeing. ppl moved to summer homes and never left. they didn't want to b in the city if SHTF. so an area would use more supply this year than normally. without the local merchants ordering extra stuff, it would cause some stuff to run out.

no ,that isn't the cause of all the shortages, but does explain why some areas are being hit harder and sooner than others.

Yup, the Buddy is the exact one. And I do "crack a window" just a bit to add airflow to the room being heated. Sounds contradictory but the heat output is such that any colder air filtering in isn't an issue. Used them for three days once upon a time when we had both a power outage and a furnace problem.
