Re: Now what! A stainless steel shortage?
My material suppliers are saying there's a shortage of stainless steel for fabrication purposes.

I'm talking 300 series stainless, of which my company has used quite a bit. Very difficult to come by now, if not impossible.

Stainless is used in many applications, and likely there's some within your field of view right now.

I'm surprised there isn't a company who reclaims the goodies buried in the old dumps. Methane eating bacteria is introduced before they are 'opened up'.

More than just that. In the last year and a half, there have been shortages of nearly every crucial product from medicine to building materials to coffee to chlorine to computer chips.

It's not going to a war effort, it's going underground.

The government tore up the Constitution denying you the right to earn a living, denying you your civil liberties, and pursuit of happiness...

What do you expect to happen when people are denied the right to go to work?

Who creates the supply?

If no work happens, no goods are brought to market.

Does it really take a genius to point this out??!!

China Stainless and Mild Steel are shit. Our profiling Machines cant even cut the shit properly

Does it do the same in China?
Ontario is North America's raw metal breadbasket, or it used to be. The West (and US) have lots of coal, why aren't 'we' making our own stainless and a lot more. We send all the scrap to the Far-east, like Chiba and South Korea.

The cost of these supplies is going through the roof. I'm looking to buy a 4 ton air condition system with gas furnace. Four years ago the least expensive one was around $7,000. Today it's around $9,000-$11,000.
 Quoting: LimaIndiaSierra

yeah..my neighbor is an AC guy..he says good luck getting a new system if you need it..supply isn't there.
 Quoting: diverdan01

Yikes!

I am also seriously wondering if there are asphalt and concrete shortages in America too. The Texas DoT can no longer perform even decent road repairs and road construction. Everything that has happened in this area of life since the relatively mild winter storms we Texans got in mid-February 2021 has been progressively worse. Even the asphalt and concrete being used is just plain getting worse as well.
 Quoting: darkwolf007

we have had a lot of concrete work done on our house outside..our guys haven't mentioned supply issues on that end. The fence was a near miracle to find the cedar and treated lumber and it cost 1200 more than the original estimate

Stop whining & get back to work, people can find a hundred reasons to stay home & collect the subsidies.. but there's only one reason to open the doors, using what we got & get back at it.

Polished steel isn't as shiny, but it's durable & lasts a lot longer.. might not be able to 'see it from Brooklyn' but it'll get the job done, just sayin'.

If they were still playing by the rules, we would have been deep into a depression a decade ago. They are literally throwing money at anything that moves. I'd say the old economic indicators are pretty much toast. At this point it seems more like trying to keep the ship afloat just a little longer than actually following any kind of free market ideology.

But hey, what do I know?

The good news is lumber has fallen 60% from recent highs. Back to pre covid levels and falling fast. Of course this assumes they don't lock everything down again.

Someone needs to compile an ongoing/frequently updated list of what's unavailable.

My company (garage doors) has delays of 20-24 weeks and growing. We don't have the raw materials needed.

This is fiberglass, wood and aluminum for our lines.

We even have a shortage of some of the tempered lines og glass.

We have an idle plant and we're about to lay off a ton of skilled workers because we have orders --- but NO WAY to fill them.

No one has ever seen anything like this in 45 years that we've been open.

It needs to go back to the start of 2020. If my assessment is correct and this stuff is being stockpiled somewhere, they wouldn't run the risk of everything being in short supply simultaneously, that would be too obvious to everyone.

We heard from a driver on one of the wood deliveries that there is a f**k ton of lumber sitting at the ports. In his words-- "there would be no shortage" if someone would just deliver this stuff. The issue appears to be no skilled drivers to deliver this stuff (at least as to the lumber). I'm not near any ports to verify but I have heard this before.
